NARIP Trailer Music Supervisor Session

Intimate Meeting & Pitch Session With
Ant Farm’s Brian Murphy

on Wednesday, April 1, 2015

Jump to registration below, click here.

DETAILS

Brian Murphy is our special guest at this NARIP Trailer Music Supervisor Session in Los Angeles.

Limited enrollment of 16 people per session guarantees face-time, registrants get brief of supervisor’s CURRENT music needs, a chance to pitch plus immediate feedback. In NARIP’s intimate session, you get to meet and pitch them for current opportunities.

Trailers have skyrocketed in recent years as an important and lucrative vehicle for music licensing. Synch fees for music in trailers tend to be larger because the rights requested tend to be more broad (worldwide, in perpetuity, used in every possible media). Also, trailers are typically part of a film’s marketing budget rather than its music budget, with film marketing budgets almost always many times larger than music budgets. One senior music executive at Fox Studios says that the music budget for a film is rarely larger than 3% of its overall budget, if that.

ABOUT BRIAN MURPHY

Brian Murphy is a music supervisor at Ant Farm, one of the industry’s foremost film and theatrical marketing agencies, where he spends his days (and some nights) selecting music for some of the industry’s biggest blockbusters and global marketing campaigns as well as for independent projects. After graduating from Manhattan College he moved west to work at Mojo LLC, a successful trailer house, where he assisted and learned from two well respected music supervisors on major theatrical campaigns such as Harry Potter, Crazy Stupid Love, SuckerPunch, Green Lantern and Hunger Games among others. He moved to Ant Farm where he now works on campaigns for theatrical, TV promotional spots and video games. Recent campaigns include Transformers, American Hustle, Wolf of Wall Street, Taken 3, The Gambler, Anchorman, Edge Of Tomorrow & Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Recent video game campaigns include Far Cry 4, Assassin’s Creed, Call Of Duty and Watch Dogs. He enjoys placing major and indie artists in projects like Laggies, Star Trek Into the Darkness, Serena, Davinci’s Demons, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and Call Of Duty: Ghosts. In his off hours he enjoys drawing, hanging out with friends and going to the movies.

Come meet this career-maker.

Dynamics of Music Festivals

Jump To Registration: Click HERE To Buy Your Ticket NOW

with Tim Sweetwood and Mike Walbert
on Wednesday, March 25, 2015

at SAE Institute of Technology in Atlanta

The global music festival business continues to grow and provide a platform for established and developing artists to acquire new fans quickly. Festivals draw from the same talent and sponsor pool in an increasingly crowded market place (over 3,500 around the world each year). At this NARIP program our experts discuss how festivals remain competitive and expand their reach, book talent, and where the best opportunities are for careerists and developing artists.

Trends and opportunities to be discussed:

  • Best opportunities for developing talent at local and international festivals
  • Rise of the DJ: Over 60% of the acts at Coachella last year were DJs
  • Growing source of revenue: VIP packages including “glamping,” VIP campgrounds and amenities
  • Streaming live, exclusivity, radius clauses: what this means for promoters and artists
  • Why more major acts now play festivals instead of arenas
  • Brands spending more on festivals
  • What sponsors want from artists
  • Performance fee ranges, and who gets what
  • More in-house positions, music divisions within brands (one soft drink company has 100-person music department).
NARIP’s panel of experts will discuss how an artist’s career trajectory can be improved with strategic bookings at festivals; how shows are bought, sold and built upon; and how people make money from them.

OVER 200 PLACEMENTS FROM NARIP MUSIC SUPERVISOR SESSIONS

Our small format works! NARIP Session participants have placed over 200 tracks as a direct result of NARIP Sessions.

NARIP’S BIGGEST PLACEMENT TO DATE : VODAFONE

Click here to read about NARIP’s biggest placement to date in a Vodafone campaign (Oct 2014) that paid handsomely and launched a career.

DON’T GET LOST IN THE CROWD : SMALL IS THE NEW BIG

NARIP Sessions are deliberately kept small and intimate, which is just one reason they work so well and why participants have enjoyed over 200 placements to date. Limited enrollment of 16 people per session guarantees that registrants meet and get face-time with our guest. Registrants also get a brief of the guest supervisor’s CURRENT music needs, a chance to pitch plus immediate feedback at each session, taking the mystery out of why a piece of music does or doesn’t fit. On-the-spot feedback enables registrants to re-work tracks and get them licensed.

Placements secured and professional relationships formed through NARIPs music supervisor sessions have earned praise and many placements! See TESTIMONIALS and PLACEMENTS sections below.

In 2011 Shannon Curtis got a Facebook message from a fan in San Diego inviting her to play there and offering her living room as a venue. The fan said she’d invite friends to come and ask them for donations to support the event.

This turned into one of the best and most rewarding shows Shannon had ever played.

Fast forward: Shannon’s 2-month house concert tour in 2013 made over $25,000. She found her house concert tours surpassing club shows in every way: more fun, more profitable and more new fans.

We’ve invited Shannon to share her experience and How-To because her strategy can be applied to so many. She’s written a book detailing her experience which we at NARIP purchased and highly recommend.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

SHANNON CURTIS

Shannon Curtis is an independent songwriter, singer, performer, recording artist and author. Her first full-length record of downtempo dreampop, Cinemascope was released in June 2013, and received a nomination in the category of Best Producer in the 2014 Independent Music Awards. Cinemascope’s follow-up, Metaforma, was released in June 2014. On that same day, Curtis also released a second full-length acoustic album of songs she has written as commissions for her fans, entitled Personal Songs Volume 1. Curtis previously released three EPs, one acoustic LP, two 10-track maxi-singles and a live album, all on her own Saint Cloud Records label. The Los Angeles Times has described Curtis as “the love child of Fiona Apple and Norah Jones,” and the Boulder Weekly has said that her music might “make you want to dance in your underwear or cry in your beer.”

Curtis’s groundbreaking use of the house concert touring format has taken her on extensive nationwide house concert tours, and she has become a popular speaker on the topic at music industry conferences, Her How-To book on house concert touring was published in February 2014, debuted at #1 on both Amazon’s Music Business Best Sellers list and also their Music Business Hot New Releases list, and has been featured in major national publications like The Huffington Post and American Songwriter Magazine.

Curtis’s music has been featured prominently in independent film and in TV shows such as ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars, ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, and MTV’s The Hills. Curtis lives in Los Angeles with her husband, music producer / engineer Jamie Hill.

ABOUT ZACH POLLAKOFF

Zachary Pollakoff is VP and Senior Music Producer at GREY, famously effective since 1917. Born in Chicago and raised in the ‘burbs, Zach was a music person from early on. Though an avid live music fan and in bands throughout Junior High and High School, it was in college at Indiana University when it really became his life. As a DJ–and later the General Manager–at student station, WIUX, he learned about more about music than ever before. He helped the station make the move to FM and then fought alongside state legislators to keep them there. After a stint of LPFM advocacy, Pollakoff moved to Brooklyn to work for indie giant, Beggars Group/Matador Records as a radio and video promoter. From Beggars, Pollakoff proudly founded Twosyllable Records, a finely curated collection of some of his favorite young artists. Later that year, while working on supervising a film–and founding his band, Eastern Midwestern – Pollakoff was introduced to the advertising industry. He spent a few years working at music and film production companies with some amazingly talented people before landing at Grey Group in 2010. At Grey, Pollakoff has worked closely on Cannes-Lion-winning work for DirecTV, E*Trade and the NFL; in 2013 won a National Emmy for his work on original music for Canon “Inspired”; and this year, a Titanium Lion for Unload Your 401k.

with Strange Music’s VP of Artist & Label Development
Violet Brown

Tuesday, January 13, 2014
in Los Angeles, CA

ABOUT VIOLET BROWN

Violet Brown is VP of Artist & Label Development at Strange Music. She was the mind behind the purchasing and marketing of Urban Music at Wherehouse Music & F.Y.E. stores. During her time at these chains she was instrumental and known for high profile events and promotions that led to breaking many new acts. Her music knowledge stretches far beyond her best known genre and she has the rare talent of picking hits and talent within many genres of music. ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Tess Taylor, President
National Association of Record Industry Professionals

Tess Taylor is president of the National Association of Record Industry Professionals, the biggest music business network in the world. She is creator of NARIP’s Music Supervisor Sessions which have yielded almost 200 music placements for participants and sold out in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Berlin, Paris and London.

Ms. Taylor is also President of the LA Music Network (LAMN.com, est. 1988) and creator of the LAMN Jam Music Contests which launched the Mowglis, a pop band selected to perform at the 2011 LAMN Jam. The band won first prize, were immediately signed to a management deal, then signed with Universal / Photo Finish Records. They have been featured on prime time network TV, have made feature music placements in major motion pictures, they now get radio airplay in primary market stations and have sold out shows across the US. LAMN Jam Music Contests also helped launch Grammy winner Tim Fagan (2006 LAMN Jam winner), Aloe Blacc (2007 LAMN Jam winner) and hosted 5-time Grammy Award-winner Victor Wooten.

One of the nation’s leading authorities on careers in the music and record industries, Ms. Taylor has connected countless people to jobs and opportunities through her work in the US and abroad, cultivated collaborations for over two decades, helped launch hundreds of projects and several companies. If you’ve read Malcolm Gladwell’s book The Tipping Point then you may recognize her as a “super-connector.” Says Hollywood Today Publisher & Editor Jeffrey Jolson-Colburn, “Tess Taylor is one of the great resources of the music business. She’s a walking job fair. She has amazing insights into where the business is going and combines that savvy with a Rolodex the size of an SUV.” Music Connection magazine named Ms. Taylor in its list of “50 Innovators, Iconoclasts, Groundbreakers & Guiding Lights of 2008” (Dec 2008). Dubbed “International Music Ambassador” by music supervisor P.J. Bloom (Glee, CSI: Miami) and the “Job Whisperer” by Loy Connelly, Ms. Taylor works with many international groups to connect their members to opportunities in Los Angeles and throughout the U.S. She has consulted leading businesses such as InsideSessions (a joint venture between the Universal Music Group and Penguin Putnam, Inc.), The Walt Disney Company, BMG Entertainment (formerly Sony BMG), Concord Records and MySpace.com in its start-up phase. Recent keynotes include Popkomm (Berlin), the Drucker Career Conference (LA), the Trigger Creative Conference (Sweden), the University of Vienna’s Institute für Popularmusik (Austria), NAMM 2011 (LA), the CA Music Industry Summit, Berlin Music Week and others.

Deeply annoyed by people who think music should be free, Ms. Taylor is a vigorous defender of intellectual property rights and debated Electronic Frontier Foundation co-founder John Perry Barlow on “free music” at the Univ. of Massachusetts at Dartmouth (2006) and was invited for a rematch at Ohio Univ. (2008). She won both times. She lectures throughout the US and around the world (in 12 countries to date), including at the Harvard Business School, in Berlin, Bangalore and beyond. From 1988 to 1993 Ms. Taylor was employed at MCA Records, Inc., last serving as Associate Director of Marketing. A classically trained pianist, she studied music at the University of Vienna and is a Phi Beta Kappa, Magna Cum Laude graduate of the University of Redlands’ Johnston College where she received her BA degree in music, German and literature. She loves traveling the world, nibbling dark chocolates and drinks lots of tea. She also loves fine fountain pens, anything written or recorded by Glenn Gould or Pete Townshend, gripping crime novels and hiking with her handsome English cocker spaniel Haribo.

In addition to running NARIP and LAMN, Ms. Taylor provides private, fee-based consulting services for people who want more personalized attention.
