ALMOST 200 PLACEMENTS FROM NARIP MUSIC SUPERVISOR SESSIONS

Our small format works! NARIP Session participants have placed almost 200 tracks as a direct result of NARIP Sessions.

DON’T GET LOST IN THE CROWD : SMALL IS THE NEW BIG

NARIP Sessions are deliberately kept small and intimate, which is just one reason they work so well and why participants have enjoyed almost 200 placements to date. Limited enrollment of 16 people per session guarantees that registrants meet and get face-time with our guest. Registrants also get a brief of the guest supervisor’s CURRENT music needs, a chance to pitch plus immediate feedback at each session, taking the mystery out of why a piece of music does or doesn’t fit. On-the-spot feedback enables registrants to re-work tracks and get them licensed.

Placements secured and professional relationships formed through NARIPs music supervisor sessions have earned praise and many placements! See TESTIMONIALS and PLACEMENTS sections below.

Tricia Holloway is our special guest at this NARIP Film & TV Music Supervisor Session in Los Angeles.

2014-11-19 In LA – NARIP Music Supervisor Session -w- Trailer Park’s Bobby Gumm (Gravity, Frozen, Godzilla)

NARIP Trailer Music Supervisor Session

Intimate Meeting & Pitch Session With
Trailer Park’s Bobby Gumm

on Wednesday, November 19, 2014

Note this session starts at 7:30 p.m.

Jump to registration below, click here.

DETAILS

Bobby Gumm is our special guest at this NARIP Trailer Music Supervisor Session in Los Angeles.

Limited enrollment of 16 people per session guarantees face-time, registrants get brief of supervisor’s CURRENT music needs, a chance to pitch plus immediate feedback. In NARIP’s intimate session, you get to meet and pitch them for current opportunities.

Trailers – which represents a large part of Gumm’s client work – have skyrocketed in recent years as an important and lucrative vehicle for music licensing. Synch fees for music in trailers tend to be larger because the rights requested tend to be more broad (worldwide, in perpetuity, used in every possible media). Also, trailers are typically part of a film’s marketing budget rather than its music budget, with film marketing budgets almost always many times larger than music budgets. One senior music executive at Fox Studios says that the music budget for a film is rarely larger than 3% of its overall budget, if that.

ABOUT BOBBY GUMM

Bobby Gumm is a Vice President at Trailer Park, one of the largest and most prolific ad agencies in the world, where he oversees all things music. With almost a decade of music supervision experience Gumm has supervised hundreds of trailers/campaigns and has spoken internationally on the subject. Some of his more recent highlights include trailers for Interstellar, Horrible Bosses 2, Guardians of the Galaxy, Big Hero 6, Inside Out, Gravity, Frozen, Godzilla, The Great Gatsby and Iron Man 3.

Also, Bobby placed music from one NARIP session participant in a trailer for the Warner Bros. Film Grudge Match starring Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone.

Come meet this career-maker.

ALMOST 200 PLACEMENTS FROM NARIP MUSIC SUPERVISOR SESSIONS

Our small format works! NARIP Session Participants have placed almost 200 tracks as a direct result of NARIP Sessions, most recently in a nationwide Vodafone campaign. Read more here.

DON’T GET LOST IN THE CROWD : SMALL IS THE NEW BIG

NARIP Sessions are deliberately kept small, which is why they work so well and why participants have enjoyed almost 200 placements. Enrollment at this Session is limited to 16 people who wish to pitch. Pitch registrants get face-time with Rachel, a brief of our guest’s CURRENT music needs prior to the session to help them prepare, time to pitch plus immediate feedback from her. Meet and pitch Rachel for current opportunities.

This event also includes general admission seating for those who wish to attend and observe, but not pitch. General admission registrants will have an opportunity to hear the panel discussion portion of the program, ask questions and meet Paul.

Placements secured and professional relationships formed through NARIPs music supervisor sessions have earned praise and placements! See TESTIMONIALS and PLACEMENTS sections below.

Neighboring Rights:
How To Collect This Fast-Growing Source of Revenue

With Bruce Lampcov, Dan Millington and Joseph Rust

on Tuesday, November 18, 2014

Jump to registration below, click here.

This little-known stream of royalty payments can be significant, especially as U.S. music companies and their artists come to better understand the value in neighboring rights to their bottom line. Neighboring rights revenue has increased over 50% in the last five years to over $1.5 billion. Until recently, neighboring rights royalties were deemed insignificant, but today they can make up as much as 15% of top line revenue. Plus, there are no direct costs associated with this revenue.

Our experts will explain where and how they exist and outline how to collect and verify them.

You will learn:

  • Who qualifies to collect?
  • The importance of nationality, country of recording, publication or release
  • Main territories for neighboring rights income
  • Main sources of neighboring rights income
  • How monies are collected and distributed
  • Income to labels and performers: who gets what
  • Can neighboring rights be assigned, licensed or transferred?
  • Issues for U.S. artists and how to collect

Intimate NARIP A&R Pitch Session

with Isaac Heymann, VP of A&R
Epic Records

Thursday, November 13, 2014
in Los Angeles, CA

ABOUT NARIP A&R PITCH SESSIONS

NARIP’s A&R Pitch Sessions are small, intimate pitch sessions (limited to 16 participants) with some of the best A&R executives in the business today. At each NARIP A&R Pitch Session, one A&R executive will listen and provide live feedback to music presented to him for analysis and consideration for label acts who accept outside material. Participants will receive an advance brief of the A&R executive’s current music needs to enable them to prepare the most focused pitch.

Isaac recently judged talent at our LAMN Jam Music Contest, and he was so enthusiastic and excellent we asked him back. He has since spoken at a NARIP A&R Pitch Session with members of the Danish Songwriters Guild. At this session he connected attendees with multiple meetings with his associates including music producers, set up co-writing sessions for one artist, and is contemplating a business relationship with yet another!

ABOUT ISAAC HEYMANN

Isaac Heymann began his career as a manager at Three Ring Projects where he was the day-to-day manager for Grammy Award Winning artist Lil’ Kim while she was on the hit television series Dancing With the Stars, as well as Three Ring’s clients Elliott Yamin, Jermaine Dupri, Michael Johns, and The Wreckers. Isaac also served as A&R for TRP Records and worked on new albums by Everlast, Elliott Yamin, and Michael Johns. Following his time at Three Ring Isaac started managing, developing, and launching artists careers with Michael Goldberg. Recently they launched the music division of LEVERAGE (who manage Mark Wahlberg, Leighton Meester, Aaron Paul, Jerry Ferrara, among many others…and are executive producers of hit HBO series’ Entourage, Boardwalk Empire, In Treatment, and How to Make it in America…) The Leverage music division includes Leverage Records, Leverage Publishing, and Leverage Management. Isaac was instrumental in creating and launching newly found Leverage Records: a partnership between Grammy Winning Producer Rick Rubin and Leverage owner Stephen Levinson. Isaac now serves as VP of A&R for Epic Records.

2014-11-06 In London – NARIP Music Supervisor Session with Matt Biffa (Snatch, Harry Potter, Made in Chelsea)

NARIP Music Supervisor Sessions:

Intimate Pitch Meetings With Top Music Supervisors

with Matt Biffa

on Thursday, November 6, 2014
in London, England

DETAILS

Matt Biffa is our special guest at this NARIP Music Supervisor Session in London.

Limited enrollment of 16 people per session guarantees face-time, registrants get brief of supervisor’s CURRENT music needs, a chance to pitch plus immediate feedback. In NARIP’s intimate session, you get to meet and pitch the supervisor for current opportunities.

ABOUT MATT BIFFA

After buying T-Rex’s “Ride A White Swan”, Matt began stealing from his parents’ record collection and watched taped episodes of “The Old Grey Whistle Test” more times than was strictly healthy for an impressionable young mind. He spent his seventeenth year listening to nothing but Tom Waits’ “Rain Dogs” and “Swordfishtrombones”, something he is convinced is responsible for his belief that Radiohead’s “Kid A” is a nice pop record.

Matt joined Air-Edel in 1996. He was quickly recognized as something of an anorak / musical know-all, and cut his creative teeth sourcing music for commercials, such as Jonathan Glazer’s “Guinness – Swimblack” campaign. During this time he began cultivating relationships with key members of the music industry, an activity also known as “ligging”. This stood him in good stead when he began clearing songs for feature films, but did nothing for his health. As well as having a disturbingly encyclopaedic knowledge of the history of popular music, he has garnered a reputation for being a canny negotiator.

He considers one of the high points of his career to be “Harry Potter & The Goblet Of Fire”, for which he put together a wizarding rock group consisting of Jarvis Cocker from Pulp, and Jonny Greenwood and Philip Selway from Radiohead. He’s also very quietly proud of being the man responsible for putting Nick Cave’s “O Children” in a Harry Potter film.

Biffa is known for his work on Snatch, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1. Current projects include London Fields, Paddington and Posh. Other credits include Frank, Filth, Top Boy (TV Series), The Numbers Station, The Crash Reel, Fresh Meat (TV Series), Made in Chelsea (TV Series), Unfinished Song, Seven Psychopaths, Killer Elite (music supervisor), Combat Hospital (TV Series), Sirens (TV Series) and others.

Come meet this career-maker.

ALMOST 200 PLACEMENTS FROM NARIP MUSIC SUPERVISOR SESSIONS

Our small format works!

Placements secured and professional relationships formed through NARIPs music supervisor sessions have earned praise and placements! See TESTIMONIALS and PLACEMENTS sections below.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Tess Taylor, President
National Association of Record Industry Professionals

Tess Taylor is president of the National Association of Record Industry Professionals, the biggest music business network in the world. She is creator of NARIP’s Music Supervisor Sessions which have yielded almost 200 music placements for participants and sold out in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Berlin, Paris and London.

Ms. Taylor is also President of the LA Music Network (LAMN.com, est. 1988) and creator of the LAMN Jam Music Contests which launched the Mowglis, a pop band selected to perform at the 2011 LAMN Jam. The band won first prize, were immediately signed to a management deal, then signed with Universal / Photo Finish Records. They have been featured on prime time network TV, have made feature music placements in major motion pictures, they now get radio airplay in primary market stations and have sold out shows across the US. LAMN Jam Music Contests also helped launch Grammy winner Tim Fagan (2006 LAMN Jam winner), Aloe Blacc (2007 LAMN Jam winner) and hosted 5-time Grammy Award-winner Victor Wooten.

One of the nation’s leading authorities on careers in the music and record industries, Ms. Taylor has connected countless people to jobs and opportunities through her work in the US and abroad, cultivated collaborations for over two decades, helped launch hundreds of projects and several companies. If you’ve read Malcolm Gladwell’s book The Tipping Point then you may recognize her as a “super-connector.” Says Hollywood Today Publisher & Editor Jeffrey Jolson-Colburn, “Tess Taylor is one of the great resources of the music business. She’s a walking job fair. She has amazing insights into where the business is going and combines that savvy with a Rolodex the size of an SUV.” Music Connection magazine named Ms. Taylor in its list of “50 Innovators, Iconoclasts, Groundbreakers & Guiding Lights of 2008” (Dec 2008). Dubbed “International Music Ambassador” by music supervisor P.J. Bloom (Glee, CSI: Miami) and the “Job Whisperer” by Loy Connelly, Ms. Taylor works with many international groups to connect their members to opportunities in Los Angeles and throughout the U.S. She has consulted leading businesses such as InsideSessions (a joint venture between the Universal Music Group and Penguin Putnam, Inc.), The Walt Disney Company, BMG Entertainment (formerly Sony BMG), Concord Records and MySpace.com in its start-up phase. Recent keynotes include Popkomm (Berlin), the Drucker Career Conference (LA), the Trigger Creative Conference (Sweden), the University of Vienna’s Institute für Popularmusik (Austria), NAMM 2011 (LA), the CA Music Industry Summit, Berlin Music Week and others.

Deeply annoyed by people who think music should be free, Ms. Taylor is a vigorous defender of intellectual property rights and debated Electronic Frontier Foundation co-founder John Perry Barlow on “free music” at the Univ. of Massachusetts at Dartmouth (2006) and was invited for a rematch at Ohio Univ. (2008). She won both times. She lectures throughout the US and around the world (in 12 countries to date), including at the Harvard Business School, in Berlin, Bangalore and beyond. From 1988 to 1993 Ms. Taylor was employed at MCA Records, Inc., last serving as Associate Director of Marketing. A classically trained pianist, she studied music at the University of Vienna and is a Phi Beta Kappa, Magna Cum Laude graduate of the University of Redlands’ Johnston College where she received her BA degree in music, German and literature. She loves traveling the world, nibbling dark chocolates and drinks lots of tea. She also loves fine fountain pens, anything written or recorded by Glenn Gould or Pete Townshend, gripping crime novels and hiking with her handsome English cocker spaniel Haribo.

In addition to running NARIP and LAMN, Ms. Taylor provides private, fee-based consulting services for people who want more personalized attention.

SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKERS

SERGE DURAND
A&R Consultant
Atlantic Records and Jermain Dupri’s So So Def Management

Raised in Jamaica Queens, NY, never once did this ALL-CITY basketball player Serge Durand think that his love for music would turn into a successful career. After moving to Atlanta to attend Clark Atlanta University, he met recently retired Bad Boy recording artist Ma$e, which gave him his first look at the ins and outs of the music industry. Upon Ma$e’s return to rap in 2004, Serge assisted him which entailed being in the studio with the hitmaker / songwriter day and night. Watching Ma$e create sparked Serge’s interest in A&R. He credits his “Ear for a Hit” to Ma$e. In 2005, a chance encounter with producer NO I.D would be the first of many new open doors for Serge, who went on to manage NO I.D. Two years later, one meeting led to another and the legendary Jermaine Dupri hired Serge as the Creative Director of A&R of his publishing company Dieniahmar Music Publishing. Dieniahmar’s roster includes award winning songwriter Cristyle (Mariah Carey “Touch My Body”), Nitt i(Young Joc “It’s Going Down”), Natural Disaster (Soulja Boy “Turn My Swag On”), L Roc (Usher “Yeah”, Nelly “Grillz”), Marvelous J (Rocko “This Morning”), Marcus John (Day 26 “I Need That”), Free Agentz, and Young Juve. Countless hours spent in Atlanta studios placing songwriters with producers, looking for the next big thing finally paid off when Atlantic Records Executive Vice President of A&R, Mike Caren caught wind of Serges’ hustle and work ethic, and him as an A&R Consultant in 2009. As he continues to work on projects for artists such as T.I., Plies, Trey Songz, Pleasure P, and Flo-Rida he strives to be the best at what he does. Never complacent, he is eager to change the game and offers advice to anyone who will listen. Currently Serge works with Jermain Dupri’s So So Def Management company and manages a team of producers.

RAYCHEL JONES
A&R Management

While still in college, Raychel Jones founded A&R Management to manage local upcoming talented artists, producers, and songwriters and assist them to achieve their career goals. She also got her first industry job at that time as a college marketing rep for SoSo Def and Interscope Records. She coordinated meet and greets, radio interviews and marketing campaigns for Interscope artists such as Keyshia Coles, Robin Thicke, Souljah Boy, Rick Boy, Keri Hilson and others. Her senior year feeling the need to fill a void for producers, she created I Beat Daily and the Official Producers Battle was established. The event created a platform for upcoming producers to showcase their talents for industry executives. I Beat Daily grew as the largest and most anticipated event not only for producers but also for artists and music lovers in Virginia. The event has expanded to Raleigh, NC and Atlanta, GA, now a meeting point for upcoming producers and major label executives. I Beat Daily has garnered participation from Atlantic, Interscope, Sony, and Epic. Kalief Brown (APG), Tano (Song BMG), and Razhjah (A$AP Ferg “Let it Go”) are just couple of producer who have came up from I Beat Daily. Raychel also worked with Ray Daniels, VP of A&R for Epic Records, in addition to his management company R.A.Y.D.A.R, home to Epic recording artist Curtis Fields and hit songwriters Rock City. Currently Raychel manages producer Razjah who produced the latest single for A$AP Ferg (Let it Go).

NARIP Music Supervisor Sessions:

Intimate Pitch Meetings With Film & TV Music Supervisors

with Frankie Pine

on Tuesday, October 14, 2014
in Los Angeles, CA

Frankie Pine is our special guest at this NARIP Film & TV Music Supervisor Session in Los Angeles.

Along with her television expertise, she has extensive film credits, serving as music consultant on such successful films as Steven Soderbergh’s “Ocean’s 11, 12 and 13,” and on the soundtrack for the Academy Award-winning movie “Traffic” for which she received a Grammy nomination.

After six years at The Source, Morales gave up full-time writing duties to pursue the executive side of the business. By 2000, Morales was overseeing production management at Goliath Artists, Inc., the management firm of music executive Paul Rosenberg. Morales helped Goliath expand clientele by heading the Producer Management division of the company, where he helped navigate the careers of artists such as DJ Muggs (Cypress Hill), Dame Grease, DJ Shock, The Beatnuts and The Alchemist. In 2001, Rosenberg and Eminem appointed him as Director of A&R at Shady Records. In 2002, Morales signed artist 50 Cent who went on to sell over 10 million records worldwide. Eminem wore a shirt promoting the campaign during his performance at the 2004 Grammy Awards. In 2005, Morales founded The Monday Night Fight Klub, a bi-weekly event that pitted emcees against each other in a verbal competition. MNFK was later developed into an MTV series Morales’ company, Rigg’d Up, Inc. partnered with Quincy Jones III’s QD3 Entertainment (Beef, Tupac: Thug Angel, The MC) to create hip-hop based content that range from in a variety of mediums including television, movies, and DVDs. DETAILS

In Berlin? Then attend NARIP’s Music Supervisor Sessions at Berlin Music Week!

These sessions have sold out four years in a row at Berlin Music Week and at Berlin Goes SXSW (featuring Gary Calamar, Andrea von Foerster, Angela Leus, Heather Kreamer, Paul Logan and Michael Hill), and due to demand, we make this special LIMITED ENROLLMENT program available to you as well.

OVER 150 PLACEMENTS FROM NARIP MUSIC SUPERVISOR SESSIONS

Our small format works! NARIP Session participants have placed over 150 tracks as a direct result of NARIP Sessions.

DON’T GET LOST IN THE CROWD : SMALL IS THE NEW BIG

NARIP Sessions are deliberately kept small and intimate, which is just one reason they work so well and why participants have enjoyed over 150 placements to date.

Music supervisor Gerrit Winterstein is our special guest at this NARIP Music Supervisor Session, he will be seeking new music for current projects. Limited enrollment of 15 people per session guarantees face-time with her, registrants get brief of his CURRENT music needs prior to the session to help them better prepare, a chance to pitch plus immediate feedback from him to YOUR material. In NARIP’s intimate session, you get to meet and pitch him for current opportunities.

ABOUT GERRIT WINTERSTEIN

A musician with a background in business management of audiovisual media, Gerrit’s involvement with music, instruments and any other objects which make sounds can be traced back to his first months in 1973. His calling to focus on the marketing and production side of things, thereby creating a platform for musicians and enabling multiple ways to utilize their work, came early. Work experience: 1996-98 studio manager and sound assistant at Peppermint Park GmbH (Mousse T, Bootsy Collins, Cultured Pearls), 1998-2000 A&R marketing assistant at Laughing Horse Music GmbH (Echt), 2000-2005 A&R manager and exploitation manager at SMV Schacht Musikverlage GmbH (including Carl Douglas, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Peter Thomas, Boozoo Bajou). Distinct hands-on experience in international and national synchronization and licensing rights, as well as in music and sound production, and the works. In 2005, together with Jung von Matt Group, Gerrit co-founded White Horse Music GmbH. In early 2014 he openes another office in Berlin and runs both company locations from there.

Come meet Gerrit!
