A top-rated music supervisor in Los Angeles is our special guest at NARIP’s next Music Supervisor Session in London: High Bias Industries Music Supervisor Toddrick Spalding. Spalding commissions, licenses and places music for global feature film trailer campaigns for the world’s biggest blockbusters as well as for independent films, global advertising campaigns and television. Limited enrollment of 16 people per session guarantees face-time, registrants get brief of supervisor’s CURRENT music needs, a chance to pitch plus immediate feedback. In NARIP’s intimate session, you get to meet and pitch him for current opportunities.

Trailers – which represents a large part of Toddrick’s client work – have skyrocketed in recent years as an important and lucrative vehicle for music licensing. Synch fees for music in trailers tend to be larger because the rights requested tend to be more broad (worldwide, in perpetuity, used in every possible media). Also, trailers are typically part of a film’s marketing budget rather than its music budget, with film marketing budgets almost always many times larger than music budgets. One senior music executive at Fox Studios says that the music budget for a film is rarely larger than 3% of its overall budget, if that.

ABOUT TODDRICK SPALDING

Toddrick got his start in the music industry as founder and drummer of Chicago indie rock band The Detachment Kit. Since those long ago days of constant touring and near-death experiences, he has built a career in music supervision for feature film marketing, indie features, traditional advertising and television. His company High Bias Industries, a collective of music supervisors, has worked on numerous high-profile projects (Django Unchained trailer, Givenchy worldwide campaign, NBA Finals, and FX’s Wilfred Season 2 and others). Prior to launching High Bias in 2011, Toddrick worked as a Music Supervisor at film marketing agencies including The Cimmaron Group and mOcean/CMP+, and also spent time as Director of Music for Film & TV at the Spectre Entertainment Group and as Director of Marketing for Knitting Factory Hollywood / Knitmedia. He is also currently the West Coast Creative Director at Spirit Music Group, home to artists as diverse as Pete Townshend, Marc Bolan, Lou Reed, The Naked and Famous and The Used.

Blue Rocks, Hip Hop Producer

“As music takes on another face, we have to fight for the spot of greatness! Which means real lyrics from the truth, and beats that make you fall in a trance.” So says Blue Rocks of Blue Rocks Music / Crossfade Studios. Born in Bed-Stuy Brooklyn he always knew music was his forte. “I started rapping in the 5th grade after I heard Big Beat spun for the first time by DJ Hollywood on a tape. I chopped that part about 30 times so all I could hear was beats and cuts. I wrote my first rap to that,” he says. He started DJ-ing, dancing, graffiti, the whole B-Boy lifestyle and hasn’t stopped since. “I started producing around the age of 16 when my first producer E. Blaize showed me the ropes to making tracks. I learned melodies and chords from my cousin, Anthony Michael, an excellent piano player.” Over 18 years in the business has afforded Blue a full production and recording studio where he produces music ranging from Hip-Hop, R&B, Soul, and Reggae to spoken-word poetry. Blue Rocks dropped his self-produced debut album Lock & Load which is receiving great reviews all over the country. Blue Rocks works with Raekwon the Chef / musiq soulchild / OMG Girlz / Jagged Edge/ Kandi / MOBB DEEP / Special Ed / Bigg Bubb / Bobby Valentino / T-Boz and others. Dan Hannon, Producer
Eldest Only Productions & New Canvas Entertainment


Dan Hannon is a music producer, engineer, mixer, songwriter, and musician. Dan recently finished production of the “Simple Math” LP, for Sony/Favorite Gentlemen artist Manchester Orchestra. He also co-produced their sophomore release “Mean Everything To Nothing” with eight-time Grammy Award Winner Joe Chiccarelli resulting in the Top 10 rock hit “I’ve Got Friends.” He produced, recorded, mixed, and co-wrote Anything Worth Saying by Aaron Shust the #1 Christian record of the year in 2006, which was nominated for six Dove Awards and won three. The song “My Savior, My God” is Billboard’s #2 Christian/Gospel Song of the Decade of the 2000s. Dan was also nominated for a Dove Award for Pop Contemporary Album of the year in 2007 for Aaron’s Sophomore release Whispered and Shouted. He currently serves on the board of governors for the Atlanta chapter of The Recording Academy.

Matt Still is a Grammy-winning Producer, Engineer, and Mixer based in Atlanta, GA. A life-long musician, Matt started studying classical piano at the age of four and could read music before he could read a book. A career outside of music has never been an option for him. He started working in studios around Atlanta at the age of 20 and never looked back. Matt’s credits include Elton John, Outkast, Lady Gaga, Jewel, Rod Stewart, Joss Stone, PNAU, Santana, Alice In Chains, B.B. King, T.I., Nelly, Sevendust, Third Day, Bruce Hornsby, Ann Wilson, Steve Walsh, TLC, Arrested Development, Brandi Carlile, Patti LaBelle and Stevie Wonder. He is a three-time Grammy nominee and won the Album of the Year Grammy for his work with Outkast on “Speakerboxxx/The Love Below.” Matt has worked extensively in studios across North America and Europe. He recently worked with James Newton Howard on the soundtrack to “Gnomeo & Juliet” at Abbey Road Studios in London, and is now completing a project with Jewel for Lifetime and Placement Music. An Atlanta native, Chloe is passionate about getting involved with, and leaving a mark on, Atlanta’s music and entertainment industries. After graduating from Georgia State University she began working for a music management company in the public relations and new media marketing departments, and quickly expanded into the college radio promotion and marketing world. From there Chloe joined the board of directors at the Atlanta chapter of the National Association of Record Industry Professionals (NARIP), and also serves on the PR/marketing committee for Georgia Music Partners, an Atlanta-based non-profit dedicated to promoting the business of music and music technology in Georgia. Most recently, Chloe has dived into music licensing and placement, joining the Affix Music team as the company’s newest associate.

If a record executive’s Hall of Fame existed, Al Schlesinger would be inducted. This music industry luminary survived over five decades of the music business as a music publisher, record company executive, personal artist manager and music attorney with ethics, dignity and integrity – qualities needed now more than ever.

The National Association of Record Industry Professionals (NARIP) will honor Mr. Schlesinger at a dinner on the evening of Wednesday, September 12, 2012 and will establish a scholarship fund in his name.

Mr. Schlesinger has always been gracious and generous in sharing his knowledge and insight with other colleagues. His perspective and example help to elevate the level of professionalism and quality achievable in this business. He is an inspiration and a mentor to many.

Please join our celebratory band of record company presidents, executives, artist managers, past and present clients, recording artists, producers and others to honor him. All are welcome!

We have kept the cost for this event low to enable the maximum number of people to attend who wish to honor Mr. Schlesinger. ABOUT ALFRED SCHLESINGER

Alfred W. Schlesinger has been a practicing California attorney for over forty years, specializing in music and intellectual property. Prior to becoming an attorney, Mr. Schlesinger spent eight years as a music publisher and record company executive, and qualified as an early member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences as a songwriter and record producer. He also had one experience as a personal manager, representing the group “Bread” from its inception to its dissolution ten years later. Mr. Schlesinger is a past president of the California Copyright Conference and a founding member of the International Entertainment Lawyers Association. He has taught courses concerning the legal and practical aspects of the music business at UCLA and currently teaches a music business course for two weeks each year at Full Sail Center for the Recording Arts in Winter Park, Florida. He also appears frequently as guest lecturer and panelist at schools and music business seminars. He was a two-term Chairman and President of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, served as its Treasurer for a period of four years and served as a Trustee of said organization for twelve years. Mr. Schlesinger also was on the TV Committee which co-produced the Grammy Show on behalf of the Academy for eleven years. Mr. Schlesinger served four years as President of the Society of Singers, a charitable organization benefiting professional singers. He also served for ten years as a member of the Board of Directors of Musicares, an organization devoted to assisting those in the music business who are in need. A number of years ago he was honored by being named Billboard’s Entertainment Attorney of the Year.

ABOUT ANGELA LEUS

A classically trained pianist/violinist who graduated from USC’s Thornton School of Music, Angela Leus started her career in the music department at Miramax Films. During that time, she was involved in music licensing for both films and trailers, soundtrack marketing and score production, working on such projects as Chicago, Cold Mountain and The Reader. She then moved to the promo music department of NBC-Universal Television, working on promos for the network, Bravo and all affiliates. In 2005, Angela returned to work for Bob and Harvey Weinstein at The Weinstein Company/Dimension Films, where she resumed her role overseeing score production and serving as music executive on such films as Kevin Smith’s Zack and Miri Make A Porno and Youth In Revolt. Angela then went on to oversee the music department for Ignition Creative, a multi-media motion picture and television marketing company, working on marketing campaigns for various projects including The Fighter, True Grit and The Social Network. She currently is Director of Film Music at Universal Pictures, acting as in-house music supervisor and overseeing all music-related issues on both theatrical and home entertainment projects. Recent and upcoming projects include American Reunion, Pitch Perfect starring Anna Kendrick and RIPD starring Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS


Arne Lucas, Consultant, Illiance Creative Group

Formerly the Director of Mobile Marketing at INgrooves, Arne has spent over half his life in the music industry. His first experience was in the early ‘90s as an artist with the San Francisco-based Soul / R&B vocal group IF. During this time he realized he felt more comfortable behind the scenes, and went on to perfect his skills as a recording engineer. By the mid ‘90s he was chief recording engineer for a full service recording studio located in San Francisco’s Mission District and was working as an executive assistant to the President of a local Bay Area label – Classified Records – which was picked up by Tommy Boy in the late ‘90s.

At the time, the Bay Area music scene was thriving but Arne felt that there was more to accomplish. By now he excelled at the label, getting his hands into everything from A&R duties, to engineering, physical retail distribution and licensing. He was soon hired on full time and thrived at the label. Arne took to the business of music, expanding his knowledge of publishing, licensing and contract negotiations. He moved on to assist in a new music venture for the New York City start-up A Media, which focused on the Asian American entertainment industry.

He was then approached a few years later by his mentor at Classified to take on a Music Supervisor position for 360 Media Group. 360 Media’s flagship product was a DVD series called 360 Video Magazine, a quarterly video magazine that specialized in the import car scene, extreme sports, music and entertainment. Its first mainstream release “Hard Drive” was certified gold and distributed at major retail chains such as Best Buy, Wal-Mart and Target as well as hundreds of smaller retail stores worldwide. After a number of years and over 20 releases under his belt at 360, the DVD market was on a decline so Arne moved into a new career.

In 2003, he accepted a Product Manager position with Hudson Entertainment Inc. who had just acquired the license to The Source Magazine. This was his first experience in the wireless entertainment industry and he hasn’t looked back since. He was integral to bringing what many say was the “Bible of Hip Hop” for over 20 years – The Source Magazine – to mobile. The Source Mobile Channel was one of the only ringtone applications on deck that strictly distributed Hip-Hop/Urban ringtones – this was during the lucrative “polyphonic” era of the ringtone and well before carrier white label mastertone stores such as the ones currently available on Verizon, Sprint, AT&T etc. He eventually moved to a more video game-centric position in mobile as an Account Manager with Namco Networks – working directly with carriers to launch the classic game catalog for mobile from the legendary video game giant. It was here where he learned the intricacies of the carrier world. After close to 2 years peddling mobile video games he decided to get back into the music business at INgrooves where he served as Director of Mobile Marketing for 4 years, overseeing the mobile business for the digital label.


Raj Singh, Mobile Consulting / Strategy / Product Planning / Definition Expert

Raj Singh is a mobile industry veteran having worked across the space over the past 12 years. Raj is the Founder and CEO of venture-backed Tempo AI focused on developing a day assistant. Tempo AI was spun-out of SRI (Stanford Research Institute) where Raj served as an EIR (Entrepreneur in Residence). Previously, Raj was the founding Vice President of Business Development for Skyfire, a mobile browser that supports full Flash rendering. Prior to Skyfire, Raj co-founded venture-funded Veeker, NBC’s mobile video citizen journalism service and ToneThis, CNET’s top downloaded ringtone creation product. Raj has also worked in product management, engineering, strategy and consulting roles for Kodak Mobile, Dell Mobile, Cellmania, MobiTV, PlayPhone, Tellme, Samsung, Turk Telekom, IGT, Hungama Mobile, Vlingo and Antenna Software. Raj’s personal projects include GameChalk, an SMS multi-player game service, Pubwalk, an LBS bar-hopping service and Wired Mashup of the Year winner in 2006 and YumYum Labs, an Android recipe voice search application and Sprint App 4G Challenge winner. Raj is also a mobile advisor to numerous companies including Movoxx, Nearverse, TinyTube, LocalResponse, Textopoly, Knocking Video and also an investor via ENIAC Ventures. Raj is a regular mobile writer and speaker including formal and guest blogging for GotoMobile, Venturebeat, O’reilly Emerging Telephony and VisionMobile. Raj is a mentor at 500 Startups and Founder Labs and has also made contributions to a number of mobile user and expert groups including the JCP, MMA and the Bluetooth SIG. Kahlil Najar, Mobile Manager, INgrooves Fontana

Currently the Mobile Manager for INgrooves Fontana, Kahlil Najar started his career in music the old fashioned way by working at an independent retail record store. While there he dove head first into the music industry by obtaining an internship at Universal Music, a part time job at KARA in San Jose, working at KMEL as a street team member, volunteering at Classified Records all the while attending Cal State Hayward where he received his degree in Business Management with an emphasis on Marketing Management. After working the front lines of retail, Kahlil landed a job at KOCH Records (now E1 Entertainment) as a Field Marketing Representative which eventually transformed into a physical sales position. He serviced all the major accounts as well as some key independent retailers and was one of only two representatives to service the entire Bay Area. After he saw the decline of the physical market, Kahlil changed career paths and moved into an Artist Relations representative position at music merchandise heavyweights, Cinder Block. Kahlil’s responsibilities included signing bands to new merchandise contracts and placing orders for artists that performed worldwide. He was the account lead for a range of bands like the Silversun Pickups, H20, 30 Seconds To Mars and Death By Stereo. Seeing that music was still adapting to different ways to sell music, Kahlil joined the team over at Tribal Brands, the music agency of choice for Verizon Wireless. Starting with clearing artwork for print advertising, Kahlil eventually transferred into the Music Team and helped facilitate the programming of the Verizon VCast Music handset as well as the VCASTMUSIC with Rhapsody online application. He was also an integral part of the team which helped Verizon Wireless decide on who Verizon should team with for tour sponsorships, licensing/synch opportunities, online promotions and in-store activations. After a downturn in the economy, Kahlil planted himself at skyrockit where he was the lead programmer for Virgin Mobile and Boost Mobile. He helped launch Boost Mobile’s Music related Twitter contests as well as securing artists for Virgin Mobiles First Dibs program. Starting in late April 2012, Kahlil joined INgrooves Fontana as the Mobile Manager in charge of securing mobile promotions for all of INgrooves Fontana’s labels.

Multiple rights or “360 deals” are now industry standard. At this NARIP program, two attorneys explain what these deals encompass. They will then face off in a live mock negotiation of key deal points and contractual issues that affect an artist’s rights and income, and a record company’s ability to acquire and monetize additional rights.

These experts come together to give you the inside track on major deal points, what they mean and what leverage you have to negotiate the best possible deal.

Most people think they can just hand a negotiation to a lawyer, and leave it at that. But as a professional, you need to be aware of the process and deal points, too, and what the short- and long-term implications to your artists’ careers may be.

Most importantly, you will see HOW a 360 deal is negotiated and be involved in the process.

A native Texan, Heidi Massin is a music producer, based in Houston, Texas. She founded Massin Media Productions, LLC, which operates the first and only sustainable “eco-friendly” record label in Texas. Under the 1.1 Digital Recordings label, she released the album, “Elixir”, a compilation of Electronica/Dance Music. The album features artists from around the globe who are at the top of the EDM genre in their region. Heidi began her musical career as a child with her primary musical influences including Mozart, Bach and Beethoven. She had classical and contemporary piano training beginning at the age of 8 years old through the Telschick Academy. Although she grew up behind the scenes in the theater world, music has always been a part of her life. In the recent past, her music’s been featured in local television and short films in Houston. She’s currently working on scoring a feature film in Houston. In the past two years, she has been nominated for the Houston Press Music Awards in the Instrumental / Experimental genre. Her latest project involves Massin Media as a sponsor for the Springboard South Music Festival, which launched this May.

Raphaella Lima has been with Electronic Arts (EA) for nine years. In her position as Music Supervisor, she oversees the selection of licensed music and the creation of custom songs for several EA franchises. Raphaella also heads the production of EA Recordings, a division in charge of digital releases of all EA-owned music assets. She is the liaison with musical talent for all PR and marketing executions, including interviews, appearances and events, nurturing relationships with artists and managers and building long-term partnerships with great impact on artists’ career development. ABOUT MAYA HALFON

Maya Halfon is a music supervisor at Microsoft, specializing in videogames for Xbox, but also extending to game trailers, mobile games and apps, and anywhere else Microsoft sees fit to use music. Though she lives in Seattle, she’s bounced from coast to coast, starting off in Los Angeles doing licensing and background music selection for independent label Quango Records (Zero 7, Bitter:Sweet), music supervision at Michael Welsh Productions for the likes of Macy’s, Chico’s, and Chivas Regal, then to New York to act as Creative Licensing Director for all medias at Domino Records and Publishing. She’s had the good fortune to place artists such as the Kills, The Arctic Monkeys, The Dead Weather, Four Tet and Yacht, and has landed artists in everything from trailers for games such as Assassin’s Creed Brother, films such as Moneyball, ads for T Mobile, Cadillac and Victoria’s Secret, to TV shows such as Gossip Girl and Sons of Anarchy. Since working at Microsoft, she’s music-supervised a fitness game for Kinect, trailers for Microsoft Flight Simulator, and worked on games in the Forza and Fable franchises. She is a friend to the indies and a supporter of all good music. In her free time, she enjoys going to gigs, listening to reggae radio, and playing outside.

Parking is free, but please note that Universal Mastering Studios has only 5 spots allotted directly in front of the entrance to the studio. If these are full then continue into the parking structure where you will find more spots on level B2. There is also street parking available – be sure to read posted signs.
