2012-06-27 | In LA – NARIP Trailer Music Supervisor Session #4 with Trailer Park’s Bobby Gumm
×
Intimate Pitch Meetings With Music Supervisors from Film & TV Trailer Houses Session #4 with Trailer Park’s Bobby Gumm on Wednesday, June 27, 2012 in Los Angeles, CA DETAILS A top-rated music supervisor from one of the leading trailer houses in Los Angeles is our special guest at NARIP’s next Music Supervisor Session in Los Angeles: Trailer Park Music Supervisor Bobby Gumm. Gumm commissions, licenses and places music for global movie trailer campaigns for the world’s biggest blockbusters and independent films. Limited enrollment of 16 people per session guarantees face-time, registrants get brief of supervisor’s CURRENT music needs, a chance to pitch plus immediate feedback. In NARIP’s intimate session, you get to meet and pitch him for current opportunities on the spot, receiving instant feedback as to whether a song is appropriate or not, and WHY. This valuable feedback makes better pitches – and ultimately, placements – possible. In some cases, participants even have time to re-work their music to better fit a supervisors’ needs. Trailers have skyrocketed in recent years as an important and lucrative vehicle for music licensing. Synch fees for music in trailers tend to be larger because the rights requested tend to be more broad (worldwide, in perpetuity, used in every possible media). Also, trailers are typically part of a film’s marketing budget rather than its music budget, with film marketing budgets almost always many times larger than music budgets. One senior music executive at Fox Studios says that the music budget for a film is rarely larger than 3% of its overall budget, if that. Placements secured and professional relationships formed through these meetings are so good that we felt this format would work well for those who represent catalogs and/or seek intimate pitch opportunities with the best trailer house music supervisors in the business. ABOUT BOBBY GUMM Bobby Gumm is a Music Supervisor at Trailer Park, a large multi-faceted ad agency that specializes in movie trailers. Prior to Trailer Park he began his career at Intralink Film and then spent several years with Flyer Entertainment. With almost a decade of music supervision experience, Gumm has supervised well over one hundred trailers including Batman Begins, Up, Avatar, J Edgar and Batman: Arkham City. Some of his recent credits include trailers for The Dark Knight Rises, Anchorman 2, The Great Gatsby, Brave, and Horrible Bosses. ABOUT THE SPEAKERS Arne Lucas, Consultant, Illiance Creative Group Formerly the Director of Mobile Marketing at INgrooves, Arne has spent over half his life in the music industry. His first experience was in the early ‘90s as an artist with the San Francisco-based Soul / R&B vocal group IF. During this time he realized he felt more comfortable behind the scenes, and went on to perfect his skills as a recording engineer. By the mid ‘90s he was chief recording engineer for a full service recording studio located in San Francisco’s Mission District and was working as an executive assistant to the President of a local Bay Area label – Classified Records – which was picked up by Tommy Boy in the late ‘90s. At the time, the Bay Area music scene was thriving but Arne felt that there was more to accomplish. By now he excelled at the label, getting his hands into everything from A&R duties, to engineering, physical retail distribution and licensing. He was soon hired on full time and thrived at the label. Arne took to the business of music, expanding his knowledge of publishing, licensing and contract negotiations. He moved on to assist in a new music venture for the New York City start-up A Media, which focused on the Asian American entertainment industry. He was then approached a few years later by his mentor at Classified to take on a Music Supervisor position for 360 Media Group. 360 Media’s flagship product was a DVD series called 360 Video Magazine, a quarterly video magazine that specialized in the import car scene, extreme sports, music and entertainment. Its first mainstream release “Hard Drive” was certified gold and distributed at major retail chains such as Best Buy, Wal-Mart and Target as well as hundreds of smaller retail stores worldwide. After a number of years and over 20 releases under his belt at 360, the DVD market was on a decline so Arne moved into a new career. In 2003, he accepted a Product Manager position with Hudson Entertainment Inc. who had just acquired the license to The Source Magazine. This was his first experience in the wireless entertainment industry and he hasn’t looked back since. He was integral to bringing what many say was the “Bible of Hip Hop” for over 20 years – The Source Magazine – to mobile. The Source Mobile Channel was one of the only ringtone applications on deck that strictly distributed Hip-Hop/Urban ringtones – this was during the lucrative “polyphonic” era of the ringtone and well before carrier white label mastertone stores such as the ones currently available on Verizon, Sprint, AT&T etc. He eventually moved to a more video game-centric position in mobile as an Account Manager with Namco Networks – working directly with carriers to launch the classic game catalog for mobile from the legendary video game giant. It was here where he learned the intricacies of the carrier world. After close to 2 years peddling mobile video games he decided to get back into the music business at INgrooves where he served as Director of Mobile Marketing for 4 years, overseeing the mobile business for the digital label. Raj Singh, Mobile Consulting / Strategy / Product Planning / Definition Expert Raj Singh is a mobile industry veteran having worked across the space over the past 12 years. Raj is the Founder and CEO of venture-backed Tempo AI focused on developing a day assistant. Tempo AI was spun-out of SRI (Stanford Research Institute) where Raj served as an EIR (Entrepreneur in Residence). Previously, Raj was the founding Vice President of Business Development for Skyfire, a mobile browser that supports full Flash rendering. Prior to Skyfire, Raj co-founded venture-funded Veeker, NBC’s mobile video citizen journalism service and ToneThis, CNET’s top downloaded ringtone creation product. Raj has also worked in product management, engineering, strategy and consulting roles for Kodak Mobile, Dell Mobile, Cellmania, MobiTV, PlayPhone, Tellme, Samsung, Turk Telekom, IGT, Hungama Mobile, Vlingo and Antenna Software. Raj’s personal projects include GameChalk, an SMS multi-player game service, Pubwalk, an LBS bar-hopping service and Wired Mashup of the Year winner in 2006 and YumYum Labs, an Android recipe voice search application and Sprint App 4G Challenge winner. Raj is also a mobile advisor to numerous companies including Movoxx, Nearverse, TinyTube, LocalResponse, Textopoly, Knocking Video and also an investor via ENIAC Ventures. Raj is a regular mobile writer and speaker including formal and guest blogging for GotoMobile, Venturebeat, O’reilly Emerging Telephony and VisionMobile. Raj is a mentor at 500 Startups and Founder Labs and has also made contributions to a number of mobile user and expert groups including the JCP, MMA and the Bluetooth SIG. For more information, please see www.rajansingh.com. Kahlil Najar, Mobile Manager, INgrooves Fontana Currently the Mobile Manager for INgrooves Fontana, Kahlil Najar started his career in music the old fashioned way by working at an independent retail record store. While there he dove head first into the music industry by obtaining an internship at Universal Music, a part time job at KARA in San Jose, working at KMEL as a street team member, volunteering at Classified Records all the while attending Cal State Hayward where he received his degree in Business Management with an emphasis on Marketing Management. After working the front lines of retail, Kahlil landed a job at KOCH Records (now E1 Entertainment) as a Field Marketing Representative which eventually transformed into a physical sales position. He serviced all the major accounts as well as some key independent retailers and was one of only two representatives to service the entire Bay Area. After he saw the decline of the physical market, Kahlil changed career paths and moved into an Artist Relations representative position at music merchandise heavyweights, Cinder Block. Kahlil’s responsibilities included signing bands to new merchandise contracts and placing orders for artists that performed worldwide. He was the account lead for a range of bands like the Silversun Pickups, H20, 30 Seconds To Mars and Death By Stereo. Seeing that music was still adapting to different ways to sell music, Kahlil joined the team over at Tribal Brands, the music agency of choice for Verizon Wireless. Starting with clearing artwork for print advertising, Kahlil eventually transferred into the Music Team and helped facilitate the programming of the Verizon VCast Music handset as well as the VCASTMUSIC with Rhapsody online application. He was also an integral part of the team which helped Verizon Wireless decide on who Verizon should team with for tour sponsorships, licensing/synch opportunities, online promotions and in-store activations. After a downturn in the economy, Kahlil planted himself at skyrockit where he was the lead programmer for Virgin Mobile and Boost Mobile. He helped launch Boost Mobile’s Music related Twitter contests as well as securing artists for Virgin Mobiles First Dibs program. Starting in late April 2012, Kahlil joined INgrooves Fontana as the Mobile Manager in charge of securing mobile promotions for all of INgrooves Fontana’s labels. 2012-06-12 | In LA – NARIP Presents Film Makers Who Seek Music
×
NARIP Presents Film Makers Who Seek Music on Tuesday, June 12, 2012 at SAE Institute of Technology in Los Angeles Placing music in film and TV is competitive, and any advantage is a plus. Give yourself the advantage of meeting directors face-to-face who need music (songs and score) for their film projects. NARIP has long been a proponent of “meet the talent early” – whether artistic or executive talent – to get in at the ground floor. An excellent example of this is film maker Steven Spielberg and composer / conductor / pianist John Williams. Between the two of them, Spielberg and Williams have won more awards than you can count. Williams has composed some of the most recognizable film scores in the history of motion pictures (Star Wars, Jaws, Superman, the Indiana Jones films, E.T. the Estra-Terrestrial, Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List and the first three Harry Potter films), and has composed music for all but two of Spielberg’s major feature films. Their collaboration dates back to when they were both unknown and just starting out. They recognized each other’s talents earl, worked well together and voila! Together they have made and scored some of the biggest blockbusters in the world. These are the kinds of professional relationships NARIP seeks to enable with our programs and activities. So come get to know the buyers – the film makers themselves – and let them get to know you, your catalog and the artists you represent! At this program we will discuss what the film makers seek and how to market music to make it more attractive to them. Different deal types will also be discussed for licensing music in film. You will receive copies of important documents, learn how to close and “paper” these deals and keep music buyers coming back for more. Meet the buyers and get educated about the art of music placement in film! You will learn:
Don’t miss this insider’s peek at the music placement realities of the fastest-changing business in the world. Most importantly, this program gives you practical information you can apply immediately to work with music buyers and land placements NOW. THANK YOU Special thanks for her help with this program to Jessica Ramos at SAE Institute. All are welcome. You need not be a NARIP member to attend. Intimate Pitch Meetings With Music Supervisors from Film & TV Trailer Houses Session #10 with Ant Farm’s Robyn Booker on Wednesday, June 6, 2012 in Los Angeles, CA DETAILS A top music supervisor from one of the leading trailer houses in Los Angeles is our special guest at NARIP’s next Music Supervisor Session in Los Angeles: Robyn Booker, Music Supervisor, Ant Farm. Booker commissions, licenses and places music for global movie trailer campaigns for the world’s biggest blockbusters and independent films. ABOUT ROBYN BOOKER Robyn is originally from Alabama and began her career in film music nearly 9 years ago. She has been fortunate to work with successful music supervisors and studio executives alike. Currently she is a music supervisor at The Ant Farm, an entertainment marketing company that works on some of the biggest film and video game campaigns in the industry. Some of her most recent credits as a trailer supervisor include Battleship, Amazing Spiderman, Drive, Puss and Boots and The Help as well as the Call of Duty franchise, one of the highest grossing video games of all time. Before The Ant Farm, Robyn held various jobs in the industry including Kraft?Engel Management Composer Agency, Revolution Studios and most recently Paramount Pictures where she worked closely with the Senior Vice President of Music. She is extremely passionate about music and is thrilled to be fulfilling her childhood dream to work as a music supervisor. 2012-05-30 | In SF – File-Sharing Advances An Artist: BitTorrent & P2P Boost Pretty Lights’ Success
×
You are invited to NARIP’s File-Sharing Advances An Artist: BitTorrent & P2P Boost Pretty Lights’ Success on Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at SAE Institute in San Francisco Photo (L-R): Fame House’s Hisham Dahud, BitTorrent’s Matt Mason File sharing has long been the bane of the record and music industries. At this special NARIP program, we flip that notion and take a look at how one file-sharing technology advanced an artist’s career to new heights, more fans and yes… greater music sales. In 2011, electronic musician Pretty Lights and his digital marketing team at Fame House decided to distribute his music (which he already gave away for free) through BitTorrent and its worldwide user base of hundreds of millions of people. The approach was simple: since Pretty Lights is giving away music for free already – and essentially ONLY uses his Web site to do so – why not bring more people in? So Fame House created a special media bundle of three popular Pretty Lights EPs, a new single, and a music video which were distributed exclusively through BitTorrent. Results were off the charts:

SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKERS
$15 for current NARIP members (but please RSVP to reserve your space) $25 Non-members and general public ABOUT THE SPEAKERS Rich Levy, Senior Vice President, Live Nation A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Levy began working in the concert promotion business at Brusco Barr Presents in 1991. In 1993, Levy formed Alienation Inc., which booked national tours for signed and unsigned acts, as well as talent buying for such notable rooms as The Point and The Dark Horse in Atlanta. Alienation was instrumental in the signing success of James Hall (Geffen), Emmet Swimming (Epic), Skirt (Shanachie) and The Drag (Island). In April 1996, Levy became the Vice President at Concert Southern Promotions where he continued to book the Point and also booked the Cotton Club and the Roxy Theater in Atlanta. He was nominated for Pollstar Nightclub Talent Buyer of the year. Also in 1997 Levy founded the Atlantis Music Conference (which ran through 2008) along with partners Mark Willis and Lee Beitchman. In 1998, Levy became a talent buyer for Cellar Door of the Carolinas, working for his mentor, Wilson Howard. He lived in Atlanta, and booked and covered shows across the Carolinas, Georgia, and Tennessee. During this time he was instrumental in assisting Ted Mankin and Lance Sterling with the opening of the Tabernacle in Atlanta. In 1999, SFX bought Cellar Door Concerts and found themselves in a situation where they owned Cellar Door and Concert / Southern, two competing companies in the same market. Levy was offered a promotion and a new title, Regional Vice President of Southeastern Clubs and Theaters. He relocated to Fort Lauderdale to work with Randy McElrath booking the state of Florida. It was during this time that Levy made some of his first forays into sponsored tours, helping secure talent like 3 Doors Down and Our Lady Peace for tours for Cutty Sark. The next step in this evolution was working with Rick Zeiler on putting together the first Jagermeister Music Tour featuring Drowning Pool. From there Levy went on to work on the Ford Focus tour – all while still handling his day to day booking duties for SFX in Florida. In 2000, Levy’s sole holdover from Alienation, Peter Searcy, was signed to Jim Guerinot’s Time Bomb Label, a BMG-distributed label. Searcy’s debut album was released on Time Bomb/Arista that year. By late 2001, Clear Channel had acquired SFX and Levy put in a personal request to move back to Atlanta. He was able to move back to Atlanta and continue booking the state of Florida with McElrath from the Atlanta office. This continued through 2002. Between the constant travel and his ever growing involvement in the sponsorship division (Levy had worked on three Jagermeister Tours, a Grey Goose Music Tour, the award-winning Miller Rellim Tour, etc.), something had to give. Levy chose to go into developing custom sponsor tours, events, and programs full time. At the beginning of 2003, Bruce Eskowitz and Maureen Ford created a position for him as VP of Booking for National Sales and Marketing. Over the course of this year, Levy was intimately involved in creating / booking talent for programs such as T Mobile All Access, the launch of Adidas Adrenaline, Coors Light Mountain Jam, the Nintendo Fusion Tour, Miller Pure night Out, etc. In 2006, when Clear Channel Entertainment spun off Live Nation into an independent company, Levy was promoted to the position of Senior Vice President of Artist Rights Acquisition. In the ensuing years, Levy has worked extensively with a variety of Fortune 500 companies – advising on and executing music strategy and platforms for companies like Citibank, UPS, Coke, Nikon, AT&T, T Mobile, Major League Baseball, Starwood, and a host of others. With the merger of Ticketmaster and Live Nation, Levy’s responsibilities expanded to include content creation for the company’s growing online division. Today Levy lives in Atlanta with his wife Michelle and dog Max (the Live Nation Atlanta office mascot), reports to Russell Wallach, the President of Live Nation Network, and continues to develop and execute innovative, award winning programs for a variety of corporate clients. Career highlights include producing a show for T Mobile on Alcatraz, putting together the television commercial “Band Camp” featuring Dave Navarro of Jane’s Addiction for Citibank, helping create the Jagermeister Music Tour franchise, and coming up with the concept for Miller’s whistle stop “Taste Express” train tour featuring Gavin Degraw, winner of the 2007 Event Marketer Magazine award for Best Proprietary Property. Amanda Moore, Director of Marketing, AEG Live/TMG Nashville Amanda Moore began her career at Immortal Records as A&R and Promotion Coordinator in 2000. She spent the next six years in radio promotion working with Dreamworks Records, indie Skip Bishop, Artemis Records and finally as VP of Promotion for Vagrant Records where she was eventually laid off during the wrath of Spitzer (though she now jokes that she was terrible at fighting to get songs added, but always knew how to get the stations to get involved with promotion of her artist’s shows). In 2006 she re-connected with Kevin Lyman, whom she’d worked with at Immortal Records, when he hired her to run press for that year’s Vans Warped Tour and in August 2007 she joined 4 Fini as a permanent fixture, working with just 6 other full time employees to produce the highly successful tours Taste of Chaos, International Taste of Chaos, Rockstar Mayhem Festival and the world famous Vans Warped Tour. While at 4 Fini Moore wore many hats, but was best known for her marketing – including spearheading the launch of the now annual Rockstar Mayhem Festival. By her 2009 departure, Amanda was overseeing all publicity, creative and street marketing and artist relations for all tours and was the operations manager for the Vans Warped Tour which over the course of its 46 dates employs some 200 men and women, hosts over 1000 bands and sells over 350,000 tickets. In addition to her work on the production of the tours, Amanda also found time to utilize her relationships and experience for a better cause, founding the now annual Vans Warped Tour TJ Martel Bowling Tournament as well as organizing, collecting donations and auction items, and coordinating publicity for numerous auctions benefiting charities such as Skate For Cancer, American Forests (in conjunction with the Southern California Fires), and Lyman’s own organization Unite The United which raises and distributes over $100,000 annually. Drawn to NY for her now husband, Amanda moved on to 5B Artist Management overseeing all marketing and touring for bands including Wolfmother,Trivium and Slipknot. From there she went to Atlantic Records as Director of Artist Development, largely in part to help update their tour marketing arm in the new world of the 360 deal. In September of 2011, Amanda was offered the opportunity to move to Nashville as Regional Director of Marketing for AEG Live / The Messina Group. The opportunity to work with AEG (a company she’d grown to love during her tenure at 4 Fini) in a city like Nashville – and to get back to her love of “selling tickets” – was too good to pass up, and has proven to be the best decision she’s ever made (aside from marrying her husband of course). Eddie Owen, Eddie Owen Presents Born and raised in the Atlanta area, Eddie Owen’s introduction to music included church choirs, school choruses and theater performances which planted the seeds of musical passion. After he met the late Harry Chapin, Eddie turned to playing guitar and writing songs, most of which were performed in his living room. “To be truthful, I was a very poor guitarist and very poor songwriter,” Eddie muses. “That ended up giving me a greater appreciation for those who were not so poor at it.” While attending Georgia State University, Eddie paid his tuition by tending bar at local watering holes. One club was the Trackside Tavern, a new joint in Decatur that opened in 1980. Booking music at the Trackside gave Eddie a crash course in the burgeoning local scene, as its stage was prowled by mostly acoustic music veterans like Caroline Aiken, Dede Vogt, Kodac Harrison and newcomers such as Kristen Hall, Mark Reynolds, Kristian Bush and Andrew Hyra, Shawn Mullins, Matthew Kahler, Gerard McHugh, and of course the Indigo Girls. Because of the caliber of the acts performing there, it wasn’t long before live music became a fixture at the Trackside. Eddie started formulating a plan in October of 1991. It took a few months….then the dream happened. In May of 1992, Eddie’s Attic opened. Over the years, Eddie’s played host to some of the hottest acts to come out of the area including John Mayer, The Indigo Girls, Shawn Mullins, India Arie, Angie Aparo, Jennifer Nettles, Sugarland, and Michelle Malone, as well as national touring acts like Sheryl Crowe, Ani DiFranco and Dave Wilcox. Eddie’s Attic became known as “the small intimate listening room in the southeast” and “the place to catch established songwriters as well as the next group of stars”. Along with his many ownership duties, Eddie was hands-on with the band bookings as well. Then in 2002, he decided to sell the club to Todd Van Sickle, husband of popular local musician Jennifer Nettles. After 3-1/2 years of complete severance from Eddie’s, Todd sold the club to Bob Ephlin, whom Eddie had known for years as a supporter of the club and the local music scene. It is an understatement to say that Eddie Owen loves music since he has dedicated a major portion of his life to providing a venue for those who perform it. Whatever the future holds for him, Eddie’s Attic, and its future ventures, he never forgets that the passion not only extends to the musicians and bands themselves, but to the people who come to see them. Eddie has always operated Eddie’s Attic as a community of support. In October of 2011, Eddie began a new venture: Eddie Owen Presents at Red Clay Theatre in Duluth, GA. Eddie now manages and books RCT full time. Eddie Owen’s advice for performing songwriters: Play, play, play, play. Write, write, write, write. Meet, meet, meet, meet. Beth Bachman, Esq. 2012-05-16 | In LA – NARIP Trailer Music Supervisor Session #8 with mOcean’s Danny Exum
×
Intimate Pitch Meetings With Music Supervisors from Film & TV Trailer Houses Session #8 with mOcean’s Danny Exum on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 in Los Angeles, CA DETAILS A top-rated music supervisor from one of the leading trailer houses in Los Angeles is our special guest at NARIP’s next Music Supervisor Session in Los Angeles: mOcean’s Music Supervisor Danny Exum. Exum commissions, licenses and places music for global movie trailer campaigns for the world’s biggest blockbusters and independent films. ABOUT DANNY EXUM Danny has been an avid music lover since raiding his parents records as a kid. He got his start in the music industry as a DJ and live mix engineer at the esteemed 88.9 WERS in Boston, before relocating to Los Angeles to work for EMI’s Film/TV department. Since those early days, he’s made a name for himself during 6 years of Music Supervision on some of the largest film advertising campaigns of the decade (The Avengers, Project X, The Hangover, The Dark Knight, Watchmen, Get Smart, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Crazies, Saw 3D, etc.) working for film marketing houses: BLT & Associates, Buddha Jones, and Seismic Productions. In 2010, Danny co-launched freelance music supervision collective High Bias Industries and is currently Music Supervisor at mOcean.
