DETAILS

What do Jessica Dierauer, Jean Scofield, Paul Greco, Mike Boris, Josh Rabinowitz and Ryan Fitch have in common? They are all special guests at NARIP Music Supervisor Sessions at Shelter Island Sound in New York.

Representing the best and brightest in music supervision at the top ad agencies in the world, these five seasoned executives select, commission and place (and in some cases, create) music for global advertising campaigns for the world’s most recognizable brands. In NARIP’s intimate sessions, you get to meet and pitch them for current opportunities.

Come meet these career-makers.

BACKGROUND

NARIP members have made placements through these limited enrollment sessions, including most recently Peter Kimmel who placed a song from his catalog (“Soul of a Man Never Dies”) in an episode of True Blood following our session with Gary Calamar earlier this year in Los Angeles. The episode with his song airs July 31, 2011 and you can read more about it here.

Placements secured and professional relationships formed through these meetings are so good that we felt this format would work well for those who represent catalogs and/or seek intimate pitch opportunities with the best (and busiest) ad agency music supervisors in town.

Limited to 15 people, NARIP’s sessions enable you to get to know the supervisors and more importantly, enable them to get to know you. At private sessions in Los Angeles, participants were able to pitch for current opportunities on the spot, receiving instant feedback as to whether a song was appropriate or not, and WHY. This valuable feedback makes better pitches – and ultimately, placements – possible. In some cases, participants even had time to re-work their music to better fit a supervisors’ needs.

Above all, attendees MET key players in the modern music business, paving the way for future opportunities and giving them an edge in a highly competitive market.

At each session in New York, participants will have the opportunity to pitch music for specific opportunities and get immediate, direct feedback from one ad agency music supervisor.

What attendees say about NARIP’s Music Supervisor Sessions held earlier this year in Los Angeles:

  • “Thank you again for providing one of the more professional and useful events that I have ever attended. It was intimate, precise and well-executed. The feedback was immediate and valuable.” – Eric Caver, PTEC Dojo (attended Andrea von Foerster session)

  • “Another successful and extremely well-organized NARIP event, please keep them coming! … [it was] an amazing opportunity to pitch our music to Gary Calamar in such a personal and focused setting.” – Sven Spieker, Mighty Generation Music (attended Gary Calamar, Andrea von Foerster and Chris Mollere sessions)

  • Very, very informative and helpful. These are fun and the supervisors have been extremely willing to share very useful info. – Catharine Wood, Planetwood Productions (attended Andrea von Foerster, Julianne Jordan and John Houlihan sessions)

  • “I’ve had 3 managers and 5 years of plugging away on the Internet for contacts and had more success getting material in front of a music supervisor with NARIP’s sessions than anything previously! Please keep it up, I will definitely attend more!” – Shay Dillon, Independent

  • “[NARIP’s Music Supervisor series] is a very effective and beneficial program to get contact with the local and national supervisors who run the film and TV industry.” – Robert Case, President, New Pants Publishing (attended Carolyn Richardson, Gary Calamar and Julianne Jordan and sessions)

  • “Last night’s program was awesome, well-organized, inspiring. Chris Mollere was great, with positive yet constructive comments for us all.” – Annie Calder, Coral West Music

Mike discovered the power of music at a very young age. While watching cartoons on Saturday mornings he shut the sound off his TV, and cranked his brother’s Led Zeppelin, Beatles, and Black Sabbath records. This experience made him realize how music affects the attitude of a picture and set him on his future career path. Mike began his career as a recording engineer which created a foundation of sonic excellence while also providing valuable insight into the creative process.. Mike transitioned to the role of music producer and honed his craft at several New York ad agencies before joining McCann in 2002. To date, he has worked on music for more than 5,000 TV commercials. Mike’s awards include the McCann-Erickson Producer of the Year for 2006, a CLIO, as well as several Effies. Mike was also the drummer of the band – More F*ING Cowbell – which won Adweek’s “Battle of the Ad Bands” for two consecutive years in 2008 and 2009. He actively pursues unique global talent to ensure his clients always receive a contemporary creative perspective. He is a frequent guest speaker for music industry panel discussions as well as a constant source for industry periodicals.

Update: Since inviting him to speak as part of NARIP’s series, Mike Boris has transitioned from his position as Senior VP and Executive Music Producer at McCann Erickson to becoming an independent music consultant. He will have great perspective to share from his 9 years at McCann and almost 20 years in ad agency / music world. How To Use Social Media To Promote Music:
Get A Digital Strategy In Just One Session

on Wednesday, October 12, 2011

at SAE Institute in San Francisco

A digital strategy can mean the difference between “Who are you?” and “Wow, look at how many albums you’ve sold!”

Good news: you’ll find more places than ever to interact with other professionals and reach new audiences.

Bad news: where do you find the time? Between tweets and tags, groups and clouds, friends and feeds, pings and pages, diggs and blogs, you could spend ALL your time on social media and never make a sale.

Once you’ve narrowed it down – which is what this session will help you do – what are the best ways to effectively and efficiently increase your Internet presence on social media platforms?

Get tips, tricks and strategies from industry leaders Michael Brandvold (KISS, Ozzy Osbourne, Madonna, UR) and Hisham Dahud (DJ Shadow, Pretty Lights, The Green) to maximize investment of your time and get greater response for your client, music or project.

The Internet is hailed as the great equalizer for those seeking music marketing and distribution opportunities. But mere presence on the Internet does not stimulate demand… or sales. For that, you need a plan.

And that’s what you’ll get with this 2.5-hour in-depth workshop. For the busy music biz entrepreneur, this is a step-by-step blueprint for success.

YOU WILL LEARN

  • Blogging for fun and profit
  • Ways to update ALL your social media at once
  • Secrets to building an online community of fans who support the artist financially
  • Ways to increase Web traffic: 3 things you can do to double your readers in 30 days
  • How to get more people to comment on your posts.
  • How to write magnetic headlines, killer content and other tricks that generate more traffic to your site
  • How to get ratings and reviews
  • How to form a proper Call-to-Action: How to get people to “Buy This Now!”
  • Best practices for Twitter & microblogging sites
  • Essentials of Google+
  • Media Sharing: YouTube, Flickr, SideShare
  • Social News & Bookmarking: Digg, Reddit, StumbleUpon, Delicious and other niche sites
  • Software and Web sites that offer you steps to success
Michael and Hisham will also conduct a live Twitter hashtag chat during the event utilizing TweetChat.com, so tell your friends and associates to tag #naripsf on Twitter to be part of the discussion! Get the facts you need to take your artist to the top in this special NARIP session.

While watching cartoons on Saturday mornings he shut the sound off his TV, and cranked his brother’s Led Zeppelin, Beatles, and Black Sabbath records. ABOUT THE RADIO EXECUTIVES

Julie Pilat, Assistant Program Director / Music Director at KIIS FM and Program Director at KYSR 98-7fm
Session #1 on Wednesday, September 28, 2011

A young Julie Pilat, obsessed with Hip Hop, Pop AND Rock, started her radio career while still in junior high. A Seattle native, she began answering phones at KUBE in 1992, and by the time she hit high school, Julie had her own ON AIR shift at the local college radio stations KGRG and KNHC. As soon as she was able to drive herself to the station, she got her own air shift at KUBE as well. Julie’s college years took her to Arizona (ASU) where she continued to foster her radio career and passion for music at KPWR (Hip Hop) and KEDJ (Alternative Rock) in Phoenix, where she held down air shifts and worked in the programming departments. In 1998, she returned to Seattle and landed the midday air shift and the APD/MD job at KUBE. Four years later, Julie made the move to Los Angeles and was named the APD/MD at legendary Top 40 KIIS FM. The success of KIIS during her tenure there, coupled with an unbridled passion for manic genres made her the stand out choice to take over the helm at Clear Channel’s KYSR when the format switched to Alternative Rock in January of 2009. Today, Julie continues to hold both positions in the Clear Channel LA Radio Cluster (APD/MD at KIIS FM and PD at KYSR 98-7fm). In her “spare” time, Julie is a dedicated mentor and community leader. She donates time and resources to A Place Called Home in South Central and to the Youth Mentoring Connection. She is also passionate about discovering new music, mentoring new artists, and being creative with how radio can support the artist development process in the ever-changing music business.

Julie’s Awards, Honors and Acknowledgements include:

  • R&R’s Top 40 Music Director of the Year for several years.
  • Youth Mentoring Connection “Mentoring Hall of Fame” 2007
  • FMQB CHR Music Director of the Year 2009
  • Radio Ink’s Top 50 Most Influential Women in Radio 2010 and 2011
  • S.I.N. Network’s Music Director of the Year for several years

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Pandy Raye, Co-Founder, Chicks With Picks

Pandy Raye has never known a life without music. From an early age, she drew her inspiration from her parents. After playing in bands, studio work and songwriting on the side, she moved from Kansas City to Arizona in 1999 and started meeting people in the music scene here. She feels it is essential to not only build relationships, but o keep and respect them. She believes that success is also about networking and connecting with other people who share your passion. Then find the venues/events that need what you have to offer and go from there. Along the way, never make promises you can’t keep and always strive to be better at what you do. “I have been extremely lucky to have found a business partner, who shares my work ethic and vision,” she says, referring to Rhonda Hitchcock, Co-Founder of Chicks with Picks. Together they have booked almost 900 shows in 3 1/2 years and now have over 300 artists on the CWP roster! The key is having dedication, passion, believing in what you do, having the “right people” in your corner, working hard, and having great talent to back it all up. Together these Pandy and Rhonda are blazing a path for female singer/songwriters and musicians in Arizona.

Zach Yoshioka, K&Z Entertainment / Powerline Management

With a background in video production Zach Yoshioka broke into the music industry in 2002, producing nationally released DVDs for punk rock AZ band Authority Zero (Lava Records)) and Kottonmouth Kings (Suburban Noize/Capitol). After freelancing for record labels such as Maverick, Warner Bros. and Capitol, Yoshioka soon moved into artist development and management. In 2005 Yoshioka discovered Arizona 6-piece Eyes Set To Kill. Using his relationships with record labels Yoshioka secured a record/imprint deal for the group with Suburban Noize Records and the band went on to sell 40,000 copies of their first CD Reach. In the next two years he secured record deals for The Summer Set (The Militia Group) and Karate High School (Eyeball Records). Managing bands around the country Yoshioka soon partnered with longtime business colleague Kyle Borman to form K & Z Entertainment. From 2007 to present, K&Z has produced over 300 shows in Tempe, Mesa, Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tucson and has booked bands such as Asking Alexandria, We Came As Romans, Winds Of Plague, Evans Blue, Hawthorne Heights and many more. Today Yoshioka is a full time talent buyer at K&Z and keeps up strong relationships with The Agency Group, Pantheon Agency, APA, Kenmore, Windish, TKO, ICM, CAA and William Morris. With a strong background in artist development K&Z continues to manage acts along with pushing video production to further their marketing and promotion.

DETAILS

What do Jessica Dierauer, Jean Scofield, Mike Boris, Josh Rabinowitz and Ryan Fitch have in common? They are all special guests at NARIP Music Supervisor Sessions at Shelter Island Sound in New York.

Representing the best and brightest in music supervision at the top ad agencies in the world, these six seasoned executives select, commission and place (and in some cases, create) music for global advertising campaigns for the world’s most recognizable brands.

  • “What a wonderful job NARIP is doing in putting together these events that help professionals connect and share information. And how cool a person you are. Kudos to NARIP and your wonderful team.” – Daniel Indart, Latin Music Specialists (attended Chris Mollere and Julianne Jordan sessions)

Martin W. Winsch was born in Bay Ridge Brooklyn, NY and spent most of my childhood on the shoreline of Connecticut before heading off to Clemson University and graduating in 1992. Out of college, he took a job in New York working for a computer software company. The constant feeling that he could be doing more with his life prompted him to leave the security of employment for an opportunity to be the director of advertising for a start-up publication in Florida. Ultimately, he discovered that his real passion for life was rooted in music, and more importantly, in working with individuals who have a true artistic calling. In 1996, while reviewing a CD from a band consisting of guys that he played with college, he was asked if he would consider managing their current band. Six months later he was living in Greenville, SC and managing his first band. He spent the next ten years working as a booking agent and personal manager for various independent and major label artists, playing every role imaginable and making many mistakes along the way. In December 2005 he met a high school social studies teacher from Jefferson, GA named Corey Smith whom he has been managing exclusively ever since.

He landed a segment in the show and created a popular character “Nathen the Name Dropper.” Following his stint at the station, he was hired for his first label job as an intern at Virgin Records, where he worked in the radio promotions department. After Virgin Records, Ayears was hired as a Field Marketing Representative for EMI Music Marketing (then Capitol EMI Music and Associated Labels Distribution) in Dallas where he worked with artists such as Kirk Franklin, Garth Brooks, Ben Harper, Smashing Pumpkins, Foo Fighters, Coldplay, Radiohead, Tim McGraw, Trace Atkins and more. Later, he was named Southwest/Southeast Urban Marketing Manager for EMI Records, where he worked with artists such as Prince, D’Angelo, Gangstarr, Digable Planets and Arrested Development. When EMI Records folded in 1996, Chris was quickly hired by Virgin Records, where, as Urban Marketing Manager, he worked on releases for Janet Jackson, Lenny Kravitz, Tina Turner, Gangstarr, Scarface, Geto Boys and many others. In 1999, he joined Universal Music Group (UMG) and worked within several divisions of the company, including Universal Music Group Distribution and Fontana Distribution. Ayears’ first position with UMGD was Urban Artist Development Representative, where he worked closely with several labels under UMGD, including Universal, Motown, Interscope and Def Jam, which boasted a roster of top recording artists such as Jay Z, DMX, Ja Rule, Ludacris, Mary J. Blige, Dr. Dre, Hot Boyz, Juvenile, BG, Lil Wayne, and others. He then became a Sales Representative, where he sold regionally to Tower Records, Virgin Megastore, Best Buy, and various local music retailers. He later worked for the company as a National Assortment Representative. That job took him to Minneapolis, where he sold to Musicland/Sam Goody and then to Target. Ayears next position at UMGD brought him back to Los Angeles as Director of Artist Development/Universal Motown/Universal Republic, where he oversaw a team of Artist Development Representatives and worked on key projects with Nelly, Erykah Badu, Brian McKnight, Indie.Arie, Jack Johnson, Mars Volta, Mase, Mario Winans and others. He later was named Director of National Sales, where he was the liaison between the UMGD home office and the field sales staff.

Online Registrations for this event are now closed but walk-ups are welcome.

You are cordially invited to NARIP’s

Music Supervisor Session with PJ Bloom

on Wednesday, August 10, 2011

at SAE Institute of Technology in San Francisco

Representing the best and brightest in music supervision, PJ Bloom (Glee, CSI Miami, Nip / Tuck) selects and places music in blockbuster films and hit television shows, and in NARIP’s intimate session in San Francisco, we import PJ from Los Angeles so you get to meet and pitch him for current opportunities.

NARIP MUSIC SUPERVISOR SESSIONS ARE A SUCCESS

NARIP member Peter Kimmel attended NARIP’s Music Supervisor Session with guest supervisor Gary Calamar in Los Angeles in May this year, and secured a placement on the hit television show True Blood as a direct result. The song from Kimmel’s catalog (The Soul of a Man Never Dies) airs on July 31, 2011 on True Blood. Read more about this here. Scroll down for feedback to NARIP’s session from other attendees.

BACKGROUND

Limited to 15 people who may pitch, NARIP’s sessions enable you to get to know top music supervisors and more importantly, enable music supervisors like PJ to get to know you. At private sessions in 2010, Alicen Schneider needed a theme song for a game show (Minute To Win It) and Gary Calamar needed a title song for an MTV series. At another session, Carolyn Richardson needed a theme song for a television project. Participants were able to pitch for these opportunities on the spot, receiving instant feedback as to whether a song was appropriate or not, and WHY. This valuable feedback makes better pitches – and ultimately, placements – possible. In some cases, participants even had time to re-work their music to better fit the supervisors’ needs.

Above all, attendees MEET key players like PJ in the modern music business, paving the way for future opportunities and giving them an edge in a highly competitive market.

Feedback from the supervisors to music presented

  • “I could use it over a main title… good for a big use in a movie, it’s so emotional and beautiful,” Julianne Jordan said of Michael Plen’s “Amazing”

  • “Possible end credit” material for True Blood, said Calamar of Shay Dillon’s “Voodoo Queen.”

  • “You’ve got cool stuff… your production is awesome” said Chris Mollere of David Liang’s material
At this special NARIP San Francisco session, participants will have the opportunity to pitch music for specific opportunities and get immediate feedback from PJ Bloom.
