ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Tess Taylor, President
National Association of Record Industry Professionals

Tess Taylor is president of the National Association of Record Industry Professionals, the biggest music business network in the world. She is creator of NARIP’s Music Supervisor Sessions which have yielded almost 200 music placements for participants and sold out in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Berlin, Paris and London.

Ms. Taylor is also President of the LA Music Network (LAMN.com, est. 1988) and creator of the LAMN Jam Music Contests which launched the Mowglis, a pop band selected to perform at the 2011 LAMN Jam. The band won first prize, were immediately signed to a management deal, then signed with Universal / Photo Finish Records. They have been featured on prime time network TV, have made feature music placements in major motion pictures, they now get radio airplay in primary market stations and have sold out shows across the US. LAMN Jam Music Contests also helped launch Grammy winner Tim Fagan (2006 LAMN Jam winner), Aloe Blacc (2007 LAMN Jam winner) and hosted 5-time Grammy Award-winner Victor Wooten.

One of the nation’s leading authorities on careers in the music and record industries, Ms. Taylor has connected countless people to jobs and opportunities through her work in the US and abroad, cultivated collaborations for over two decades, helped launch hundreds of projects and several companies. If you’ve read Malcolm Gladwell’s book The Tipping Point then you may recognize her as a “super-connector.” Says Hollywood Today Publisher & Editor Jeffrey Jolson-Colburn, “Tess Taylor is one of the great resources of the music business. She’s a walking job fair. She has amazing insights into where the business is going and combines that savvy with a Rolodex the size of an SUV.” Music Connection magazine named Ms. Taylor in its list of “50 Innovators, Iconoclasts, Groundbreakers & Guiding Lights of 2008” (Dec 2008). Dubbed “International Music Ambassador” by music supervisor P.J. Bloom (Glee, CSI: Miami) and the “Job Whisperer” by Loy Connelly, Ms. Taylor works with many international groups to connect their members to opportunities in Los Angeles and throughout the U.S. She has consulted leading businesses such as InsideSessions (a joint venture between the Universal Music Group and Penguin Putnam, Inc.), The Walt Disney Company, BMG Entertainment (formerly Sony BMG), Concord Records and MySpace.com in its start-up phase. Recent keynotes include Popkomm (Berlin), the Drucker Career Conference (LA), the Trigger Creative Conference (Sweden), the University of Vienna’s Institute für Popularmusik (Austria), NAMM 2011 (LA), the CA Music Industry Summit, Berlin Music Week and others.

Deeply annoyed by people who think music should be free, Ms. Taylor is a vigorous defender of intellectual property rights and debated Electronic Frontier Foundation co-founder John Perry Barlow on “free music” at the Univ. of Massachusetts at Dartmouth (2006) and was invited for a rematch at Ohio Univ. (2008). She won both times. She lectures throughout the US and around the world (in 12 countries to date), including at the Harvard Business School, in Berlin, Bangalore and beyond. From 1988 to 1993 Ms. Taylor was employed at MCA Records, Inc., last serving as Associate Director of Marketing. A classically trained pianist, she studied music at the University of Vienna and is a Phi Beta Kappa, Magna Cum Laude graduate of the University of Redlands’ Johnston College where she received her BA degree in music, German and literature. She loves traveling the world, nibbling dark chocolates and drinks lots of tea. She also loves fine fountain pens, anything written or recorded by Glenn Gould or Pete Townshend, gripping crime novels and hiking with her handsome English cocker spaniel Haribo.

In addition to running NARIP and LAMN, Ms. Taylor provides private, fee-based consulting services for people who want more personalized attention.

Taylor is a vigorous defender of intellectual property rights and debated Electronic Frontier Foundation co-founder John Perry Barlow on “free music” at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth (2006) and was invited for a rematch at Ohio University (2008). She won both times. She has lectured at institutions across the nation and around the world ranging from the Harvard Business School to local colleges and universities. Ms. Taylor encourages people to adopt pets and not buy them.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Tess Taylor, President
National Association of Record Industry Professionals

Tess Taylor is president of the National Association of Record Industry Professionals, the biggest music business network in the world. She is creator of NARIP’s Music Supervisor Sessions which have yielded over 150 music placements for participants and sold out in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Berlin, Paris and London. Ms. Taylor is also President of the LA Music Network and was instrumental in launching the Mowglis, a pop band now on a major US tour. Selected to perform at the 2011 LAMN Jam Music Contest, the Mowglis won the grand prize and one talent judge signed the band to a management deal. They then got a talent agent, signed with Universal / Photo Finish Records, have been featured on prime-time network TV and are now getting radio airplay on primary market stations across the US.

By popular demand, Tess Taylor and Jason Spiewak will expand upon NARIP’s “How To Create A Music Marketing Plan” and turn it into a monthly series.

Each month, Taylor and Spiewak will tackle key issues in music marketing. Discussion to be inspired by current industry trends, and YOUR participation.

Two music marketing experts give you the facts you need to take your artist to the top in Part 2 of this special NARIP session, which we have turned into a series!

YOU WILL LEARN

  • More on Jason Spiewak’s 8 Points to Consider when Marketing a Record
  • Most important elements of a Sales Plan (part of the Marketing Plan)
  • Product placement / retail: how does it work, where to begin?

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

BRIAN SHAFTON, PARTNER, RBC RECORDS
With over 44 years’ experience in executive positions at Priority Records between the two of them, Brian Shafton and partner Bob Grossi helped build the careers of Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Mos Def, Master P, N.W.A, Mack 10, the Geto Boys and a host of others, as well as labels such as Death Row, No Limit, Rawkus, Ruthless and Rap-A-Lot. RBC works with distributors such as Navarre, Fontana, Universal, EMI, Atlantic, RED, Asylum, Caroline, ADA and Select-O-Hits to help make Jill Scott, E-40, Raphael Saadiq, Public Enemy, 8Ball & MJG, Tech N9ne, Layzie Bone, DJ Quik, C-Bo and others reach their full retail, sales and visibility potential.

Recognized by The Source in the magazine’s Power 30 (2007), RBC received props for aiding in Hip-Hop’s move towards independence and offering established artists the infrastructure for their indie labels. RBC allows its artists to retain 100 percent interest in their masters and their company. To date, the company’s biggest successes include Jill Scott’s “Words and Sounds Volume 3” which has sold over 600,000 copies and Tech N9ne’s Absolute Power and Anghellic albums, which have shipped more than 250,000 units each. RBC titles from Raphael Saadiq, The Game, Do Or Die and DJ Quik have shipped more than 100,000 units each. In fact, RBC delivered Fontana its first No. 1 independent record in 2005 with DJ Quik’s Trauma. In 2006, RBC helped Tech N9ne’s Everready (The Religion) debut at the No. 2 spot on the independent albums chart. Other RBC clients include Jill Scott, Public Enemy, Nappy Roots, EPMD, Dipset, 8 Ball & Devius, C-BO’s West Coast Mafia label, MSC, Fall Thru (home of the Ghetto Fights, Ghetto Brawls) and more.

“We’re able to penetrate retail on an urban level above and beyond what anyone else can do,” Shafton says. “We have relationships with everybody from radio to streets to press to television buyers. We’ve been doing this a long time, so we feel that we can look at a project, examine it and put forth the best marketing plan for it.” It’s a proven formula. “We have watched the majors fall apart, such as MCA, Priority, Loud and the Capitol/Virgin merger,” Shafton says. “At the same time, the independent companies we work with not only continue to exist but to thrive in this incredibly competitive marketplace. They are making money.”.

The Art of A&R:

How To Promote & Make Money From Songs

on Saturday, July 19, 2008 in Emeryville, CA

Many great songs don’t get the attention they deserve, especially these days with hundreds of A&R reps (and others) laid off and artists dropped from labels. The time has come for those who rep, write or market songs to seek new options for commercial exploitation.

It’s time for them to learn how to A&R great songs – without the mechanism of a major label or publisher, if necessary!

NARIP’s July 19 program on this topic will take an in-depth look at the A&R process and provide insight into how to commercially exploit songs, perform many functions of a publisher, and secure and capitalize on licensing opportunities.

Most importantly, you will see HOW to create opportunity and income with music.

Get educated about the art of A&R!

YOU WILL LEARN:

– How to approach songwriting as a business
– How to increase the marketability of songs
– How to get songs played on satellite radio and cable outlets
– How to get songs placed in film and television
– How to make the most of membership in performance rights organizations
– How to work with licensing agents
– How to get an established artist to cover songs
– How to shop songs to publishers
– How to capitalize on songwriting contests

And much more.

Plus a special breakout section on:

– The legal aspects of song collaborations
– Key considerations in licensing agreements
– The benefits and challenges of being your own publisher

Plus Live A&R: Special Song Critique

Our expert panelists will critique, evaluate and give constructive feedback to submissions. Music will be taken (and critiqued) on a first-come first-served basis on event day with current NARIP members given the first opportunity to have their material critiqued. If time permits, non-member material is welcome, so please arrive promptly if you wish to submit music. To submit a song, you must be a registered (paid) participant and bring one CD with one track clearly marked. One track per registrant. Thank you.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Arne Lucas, Director of Mobile Marketing, INgrooves

Arne has spent over half his life in the music industry. His first experience was in the early ‘90s as an artist with the San Francisco-based Soul / R&B vocal group IF. During this time he realized he felt more comfortable behind the scenes, and went on to perfect his skills as a recording engineer. By the mid ‘90s he was chief recording engineer for a full service recording studio located in San Francisco’s Mission District and was working as an executive assistant to the President of a local Bay Area label – Classified Records – which was picked up by Tommy Boy in the late ‘90s.

At the time, the Bay Area music scene was thriving but Arne felt that there was more to accomplish. By now he excelled at the label, getting his hands into everything from A&R duties, to engineering, physical retail distribution and licensing. He was soon hired on full time and thrived at the label. Arne took to the business of music, expanding his knowledge of publishing, licensing and contract negotiations. He moved on to assist in a new music venture for the New York City start-up A Media, which focused on the Asian American entertainment industry.

He was then approached a few years later by his mentor at Classified to take on a Music Supervisor position for 360 Media Group. 360 Media’s flagship product was a DVD series called 360 Video Magazine, a quarterly video magazine that specialized in the import car scene, extreme sports, music and entertainment. Its first mainstream release “Hard Drive” was certified gold and distributed at major retail chains such as Best Buy, Wal-Mart and Target as well as hundreds of smaller retail stores worldwide. After a number of years and over 20 releases under his belt at 360, the DVD market was on a decline so Arne moved into a new career.

In 2003, he accepted a Product Manager position with Hudson Entertainment Inc. who had just acquired the license to The Source Magazine. This was his first experience in the wireless entertainment industry and he hasn’t looked back since. He was integral to bringing what many say was the “Bible of Hip Hop” for over 20 years – The Source Magazine – to mobile. The Source Mobile Channel was one of the only ringtone applications on deck that strictly distributed Hip-Hop/Urban ringtones – this was during the lucrative “polyphonic” era of the ringtone and well before carrier white label mastertone stores such as the ones currently available on Verizon, Sprint, AT&T etc. He eventually moved to a more video game-centric position in mobile as an Account Manager with Namco Networks – working directly with carriers to launch the classic game catalog for mobile from the legendary video game giant. It was here where he learned the intricacies of the carrier world. After close to 2 years peddling mobile video games he decided to get back into the music business and is currently the Director of Mobile Marketing for INgrooves where he oversees a majority of the mobile business for the digital label.

Raj Singh, Mobile Consulting / Strategy / Product Planning / Definition Expert

Good news: you’ll find more places than ever to interact with other professionals and reach new audiences.

Bad news: where do you find the time? Between tweets and tags, groups and clouds, friends and feeds, pings and pages, diggs and blogs, you could spend ALL your time on social media and never make a sale.

Get tips, tricks and strategies from industry leader COREY DENIS to maximize investment of your time and get greater response for your client, music or project.

 Mendoza-Angel-5-UP

NARIP Trailer Music Supervisor Pitch Session with AV Squad’s Angel Mendoza in Los Angeles on Wed Oct 11 Intimate Pitch Meetings with Top Music Supervisors

WHAT TO EXPECT AT A NARIP MUSIC SUPERVISOR SESSION:

PREPARATION IS KEY
NARIP Music Supervisor Sessions are limited to an enrollment of just 16 people.  About one week prior to NARIP’s Session, all registrants will get a brief of the guest supervisor’s then-CURRENT music needs. Each registrant will have a chance to pitch in response to the music briefs provided and get immediate feedback to music pitched. Each participant must submit 7 songs (MP3s only please) 36 hours prior to NARIP’s Music Supervisor Session. Please note that due to time constraints you will only be able to pitch your TOP 3 songs for consideration and immediate feedback (more, if time permits). This process takes the mystery out of why a piece of music does or doesn’t fit. On-the-spot feedback enables registrants to re-work tracks and re-submit, which creates a much higher probability to get them licensed (choose well!). If you do not have music that matches the current needs of the supervisor, fear not! You can still attend and present the top three songs in your catalog.  Make sure the songs are unique and captivating. This is helpful because a music supervisor’s needs change constantly. To optimize impact of music you pitch at NARIP’s Music Supervisor Session, we highly recommend that you target the briefs. Good luck and see you there!
BEFORE NARIP’S PITCH SESSION:
  • NARIP prepares a one-sheet for each participant including your photo and bio for the guest music supervisor to use and review at the event, and to take with him after the event.  We will request your photo and bio one week prior to the event.  In preparing these materials, we recommend you focus on brief career highlights in your bio and have a professional photo available.
  • Approximately 5 to 7 days prior to NARIP’s Session, you will be sent a project brief describing several cues needed for a current project(s) of our guest speaker.  These often include reference songs or links so that you can hear exactly what he seeks or needs to replace.
  • You will submit your tracks with writer, publisher and other rights holder information that will also be supplied to the music supervisor during and after NARIP’s Session.
  • You will get submission and meta-tagging guidelines, and mentoring as to how best to prepare your music for submission.
DURING NARIP’S PITCH SESSION:
  • You will get to play at least three songs (sometimes more, if time permits) for the guest music supervisor who will provide feedback to you for each one.
  • NARIP moderator asks very specific questions to help participants learn and understand how to modify their tracks to make these more place-able for the guest supervisor’s specific needs at hand.
AFTER NARIP’S PITCH SESSION:
  • NARIP provides guest music supervisor with participant one-sheets and all music from NARIP’s Session, including notes detailing the guest music supervisor’s interest in specific tracks.
  • If requested by guest music supervisor, NARIP conveys additional tracks, remixes, instrumentals etc. to him.
  • If approved by guest music supervisor, NARIP provides his contact details to registrants.
DON’T GET LOST IN THE CROWD: SMALL IS THE NEW BIG
NARIP Sessions are deliberately kept small and intimate, which is just one reason they work so well and why participants have enjoyed almost 1,000 placements to date. Limited enrollment of 16 people per session guarantees that registrants meet and get face-time with our guest.
ALMOST 1,000 PLACEMENTS FROM NARIP MUSIC SUPERVISOR SESSIONS
Our small format works! NARIP Session participants have placed almost 1,000 tracks as a direct result of NARIP Music Supervisor Sessions.  Other benefits include new publishing deals for NARIP members, creative collaborations and co-writes, strategic introductions to other music supervisors and placement experts, new representation for composers and much more.
NARIP’S BIGGEST PLACEMENT TO DATE : VODAFONE
Click here to read about NARIP’s biggest placement to date in a Vodafone campaign (Oct 2014) that paid handsomely and launched a career.  Other brand placements include McDonalds and AT&T ads, among others. Placements secured and professional relationships formed through NARIPs music supervisor sessions have earned praise and many placements! See TESTIMONIALS and PLACEMENTS sections below.

Intimate Pitch Meetings with Top Music Supervisors

This session is SOLD OUT, please call 818-769-7007 to be wait-listed.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT A NARIP MUSIC SUPERVISOR SESSION:PREPARATION IS KEYNARIP Music Supervisor Sessions are limited to an enrollment of just 16 people. On-the-spot feedback enables registrants to re-work tracks and re-submit, which creates a much higher probability to get them licensed (choose well!).If you do not have music that matches the current needs of the supervisor, fear not!

  •
  • Approximately 5 to 7 days prior to NARIP’s Session, you will be sent a project brief describing several cues needed for a current project(s) of our guest speaker.  These often include reference songs or links so that you can hear exactly what he seeks or needs to replace.
  •
  • You will submit your tracks with writer, publisher and other rights holder information that will also be supplied to the music supervisor during and after NARIP’s Session.
  •
  • You will get submission and meta-tagging guidelines, and mentoring as to how best to prepare your music for submission.
DURING NARIP’S PITCH SESSION:

  • You will get to play at least three songs (sometimes more, if time permits) for the guest music supervisor who will provide feedback to you for each one.
  •
  • NARIP moderator asks very specific questions to help participants learn and understand how to modify their tracks to make these more place-able for the guest supervisor’s specific needs at hand.
AFTER NARIP’S PITCH SESSION:

  • NARIP provides guest music supervisor with participant one-sheets and all music from NARIP’s Session, including notes detailing the guest music supervisor’s interest in specific tracks.
  •
  • If requested by guest music supervisor, NARIP conveys additional tracks, remixes, instrumentals etc. to him.
  •
  • If approved by guest music supervisor, NARIP provides his contact details to registrants.
DON’T GET LOST IN THE CROWD: SMALL IS THE NEW BIGNARIP Sessions are deliberately kept small and intimate, which is just one reason they work so well and why participants have enjoyed almost 1,000 placements to date. Limited enrollment of 16 people per session guarantees that registrants meet and get face-time with our guest.ALMOST 1,000 PLACEMENTS FROM NARIP MUSIC SUPERVISOR SESSIONS
