A NARIP Series: Intimate Pitch Meetings with Top Music Buyers including Music Supervisors, A&R Executives, Synch Agents & Music Producers

Is your music getting to decision-makers –  people who can say YES and write a check? At NARIP’s intimate sessions, you get to meet music buyers including A&R executives, music supervisors, synch agents and music producers and pitch for current placement opportunities, representation, and projects, and get immediate feedback. BACKGROUND Since 2011, NARIP Music Supervisor Pitch Sessions have secured almost 2,000 placements in blockbuster films, hit television series, global promotion and advertising campaigns, and major studio trailers for NARIP members.   Since inception of NARIP’s Synch Agent Pitch Sessions in 2018, twenty (20) NARIP members have signed representation or music publishing deals as a direct result with more in the works now.  Other outcomes include collaborations, co-writing, producing and commissioned work. Topics at NARIP’s Music Supervisor Pitch Sessions:
  • Meet top theatrical marketing agency GRLSQDMX senior music supervisor face-to-face
  • Pitch songs directly to Vanessa for her priority & upcoming projects
  • Meet Vanessa who can say YES and write you a check.
  • Vanessa is a repeat NARIP guest, and enjoys working with NARIP members.
  • Learn how to get placed directly from the buyer, hear what works and what doesn’t
  • Direct access + firsthand info = better results FOR YOU
Small, focused NARIP Sessions enable one-on-one time and immediate direct feedback to music presented by participants.   At NARIP Pitch Sessions, limited to 16 people, you get to know the guest music supervisor, synch agent or producer, and they to get to know you.   Most important, attendees meet these key players, paving the way for placement, representation, collaboration and ongoing opportunities, and giving them an edge in a competitive market.
WHAT TO EXPECT AT A NARIP MUSIC SUPERVISOR PITCH SESSION PREPARATION IS KEY

NARIP Music Supervisor Sessions are limited to an enrollment of just 16 people.  About one week prior to NARIP’s Session, all registrants will get a brief of the guest supervisor’s then-CURRENT music needs. Each registrant will have a chance to pitch in response to the music briefs provided and get immediate feedback to music pitched. Each participant must submit 7 songs (MP3s only please) 36 hours prior to NARIP’s Music Supervisor Session. Please note that due to time constraints you will only be able to pitch your TOP 3 songs for consideration and immediate feedback (more, if time permits). This process takes the mystery out of why a piece of music does or doesn’t fit. On-the-spot feedback enables registrants to re-work tracks and re-submit, which creates a much higher probability to get them licensed (choose well!).

If you do not have music that matches the current needs of the supervisor, fear not! You can still attend and present the top three songs in your catalog.  Make sure the songs are unique and captivating. This is helpful because a music supervisor’s needs change constantly. To optimize impact of music you pitch at NARIP’s Music Supervisor Session, we highly recommend that you target the briefs. Good luck and see you there!

BEFORE NARIP’S PITCH SESSION:

  • NARIP prepares a one-sheet for each participant including your photo and bio for the guest music supervisor to use and review at the event, and to take with him after the event.  We will request your photo and bio one week prior to the event.  In preparing these materials, we recommend you focus on brief career highlights in your bio and have a professional photo available.
  • Approximately 5 to 7 days prior to NARIP’s Session, you will be sent a project brief describing several cues needed for a current project(s) of our guest speaker.  These often include reference songs or links so that you can hear exactly what he seeks or needs to replace.
  • You will submit your tracks with writer, publisher and other rights holder information that will also be supplied to the music supervisor during and after NARIP’s Session.
  • You will get submission and meta-tagging guidelines, and mentoring as to how best to prepare your music for submission.
DURING NARIP’S PITCH SESSION:
  • You will get to play at least three songs (sometimes more, if time permits) for the guest music supervisor who will provide feedback to you for each one.
  • NARIP moderator asks very specific questions to help participants learn and understand how to modify their tracks to make these more place-able for the guest supervisor’s specific needs at hand.
AFTER NARIP’S PITCH SESSION:
  • NARIP provides guest music supervisor with participant one-sheets and all music from NARIP’s Session, including notes detailing the guest music supervisor’s interest in specific tracks.
  • If requested by guest music supervisor, NARIP conveys additional tracks, remixes, instrumentals etc. to him.
  • If approved by guest music supervisor, NARIP provides his contact details to registrants.

2008-11-03 Show Me The Money: A Practical Guide To Music Licensing in NY
×

You are cordially invited to NARIP’s

SHOW ME THE MONEY:

A Practical Guide To Music Licensing

In New York

on Monday, November 3
at Fordham University (Lincoln Center)

To assist with your music licensing needs, NARIP is pleased to present a panel discussion devoted to licensing, one of the most important but frequently least understood areas of the business. With the explosion of media outlets hungry for music, and ongoing needs for music in film and television, opportunities for licensing abound. But the competition is fierce, too, and without a clear understanding of the basics, you may be missing opportunities and leaving money on the table.

Join NARIP’s discussion with three of the industry’s most respected and experienced licensing experts (see detailed profiles below):

  • Michelle Bayer, Founder, Shelly Bay Music
  • Monica Corton, VP of Creative Affairs & Licensing, Next Decade Entertainment, Inc.
  • Deborah Mannis-Gardner, Founder, DMG Clearances

NARIP’s panel will cover the rights involved in licensing music, ranges of fees and negotiation strategies.

YOU WILL LEARN:

  • Basic skills on how to understand music publishing licensing vs. master licensing
  • General information on how to administer your own publishing if no publisher will take you or your artists on as a client (i.e. affiliating with a PRO and the Harry Fox Agency)
  • How to find licensing opportunities and increase the marketability of songs for different types of licensing environments
  • General fee ranges for different types of licensing and how to negotiate the best rate
And much more.

Plus, we welcome your questions about licensing in advance. Please email any questions to NARIP at info AT narip DOT com.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:

MICHELLE BAYER

A long time veteran of the music business, Michelle Bayer is an executive who knows how to get things done from both the artists’ and management side of the table. Her experience includes record labels, publishers, and artist management. Prior to opening the doors of Shelly Bay Music, Michelle held the position of VP, Creative Business Development and Music Publishing at Tommy Boy Music. Shelly Bay Music provides music consulting, music placement, music publishing and royalty administration.

As VP of Creative Business Development at Tommy Boy, Michelle developed a TV / Film / Soundtrack department into a major revenue generator for the label ($3.8 million in just 36 months), giving new artists exposure in non-traditional formats when it was tough to get radio play.

As VP of Music Publishing, Michelle oversaw publishing activities for all writers signed to Tommy Boy. During this time she also developed the company’s B2B website, copyright and royalty systems and negotiated licensing deals for sampling, mechanicals, and synchronization. She also implemented the use of the Right Track System as their main royalty system for the publishing.

Prior to Tommy Boy Michelle was the Manager of Tracking at EMI Music Publishing. She was a liaison between the Copyright, Royalties and International Departments. She also dealt with mechanical rights and performing rights societies to secure proper licenses and payments for EMI’s enormous catalog of songs.

Prior to EMI, she worked with Peter Leak at The New York End Ltd. managing artists such as 10,000 Maniacs, The Waterboys and Cowboy Junkies. She liaised between the artists and the publicity / promotion / marketing departments at their labels and she coordinated their touring and travel.

During her early days in the music industry, Michelle worked with the legendary John Hammond (who discovered Billie Holiday, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Ray Vaughn among others) in A&R; with CBS Records in A/C Promotions; and at ASCAP in the membership department, learning the workings of a U.S. Performance Society. Finally, her experience as an Assistant Engineer at Media Sound Recording and face-to-face with the consumer at retail managing a Record Town chain store, has given Michelle an extremely well-rounded education about the ins and outs of the music business.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Eric de Fontenay, Publisher / Editor, MusicDish LLC

Eric de Fontenay has spent his career steeped in what has been called the “digital revolution”. In the 90’s, he worked on a variety of policy issues surrounding the communication & broadband sectors for telecommunication carriers and regulators across the world. With the emergence of the Internet, Eric established MusicDish (formerly Tag It) in 1997 as a new media firm utilizing emerging technologies and models to produce, package and distribute original web-based content. Making an early bet on the music sector, Eric launched what has grown into some of the leading voices in the growing debates challenging and shaping the industry through its trade e-publications MusicDish and Mi2N. Under his leadership, MusicDish expanded into artist development through saturated marketing and online branding, using innovative strategies such as syndicated and relationship marketing, online street teams and p2p viral distribution. Eric continues to be a frequent speaker at conferences worldwide and today manages Toronto-based ‘kaiso’ band Kobo Town.

Lou Plaia, Founder / VP Music Industry Relations

Lou Plaia is Founder & VP of Music Industry Relations of ReverbNation. The company specializes in Fan Relationship Management and is partnered with hundreds of thousands of musicians who use the company’s digital marketing platform to manage their artist-to-fan communications. Artists manage all of their songs, videos, photos, show schedules, blogs, twitter on a single account at ReverbNation and syndicate this content across social networks, emails, instant messages, blogs and twitter using a proprietary set of technologies. Every interaction is measured by ReverbNation (and you get the data as well), and results in a deep understanding of fan demographics and behavior. ReverbNation provides many of traditional music marketing services including low cost digital distro, email management, street team functionality, but the company’s real value is its ability to take the aggregate influence of hundreds of thousands of artists and offer their services to brands that seek to access the very fan bases of these artists. The ReverbNation platform provides the data needed to support these brand offerings. Since launching in October 2006, the use of the ReverbNation technology has spilled over from the indie ranks to recognized names in music such as 50 Cent, Kenny Chesney, Madonna, Pantera, Judas Priest, O.A.R., Natasha Bedingfield, Trans Siberian Orchestra, Sara Bareilles, Lamb of God and Jason Mraz, to name a few. With over 345,000 independent and mainstream musicians already using the site, the company also boasts healthy growth figures of 20,000/month, 1,500,000 unique URLS with ReverbNation content and over 1,000,000 songs registered on the site. Plaia was previously VP Marketing and Artist Development, Lava / Atlantic Records. While there he oversaw all aspects of Marketing and Artist Development for Lava Records, including creation and implementation of marketing campaigns for Kid Rock, Simple Plan, Uncle Kracker, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Blue Man Group, Nonpoint, O.A.R., Unwritten Law, Skindred, Cold, Antigone Rising, and many others. Responsible for negotiating strategic corporate partnerships such as Nascar’s Chevy Rock n Roll 400, Schick Intuition Tour, Disney’s Grad Night and many others. Plaia worked with Founder of Lava Records to launch the company. As key liaison between Lava Records and the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, annual record sales increased from $1 million to $10 million in three years. This increase in record sales correlated with annual ticket sale increases from 85,000 to 1,000,000 tickets sold. Prior to Lava, Plaia was VP Marketing and Strategic Planning of Atlantic Records where he reported directly to the President on all marketing and promotion initiatives, and overseeing annual $50 million Marketing and Promotion Budgets for Atlantic Records and all its subsidiaries. While there, he also developed, executed and managed the marketing campaign of several niche artists, including George Carlin, Mike Stern and others.

Taking piano lessons from the age of 5, Peter graduated from the Conservatorium of Music in Sydney, Australia proficient not only in piano but several other brass, woodwind and stringed instruments.  Classical music soon gave way to rock ‘n’ roll, and a brief but impressive career was spent playing keyboards in small clubs to outdoor arenas with various bands in Australia.  Peter graduated from live performances to studio work and soon became a keyboard session player in great demand in many studios Downunder. As a Music Industry executive, Peter has represented Paul McCartney, Queen, David Bowie, Kate Bush, A-ha, Foreigner, Cheap Trick, Elton John, Neil Diamond, Roy Orbison, Divinyls, Roxette, Europe, Gilbert O’Sullivan, The Motels, Leo Sayer, Dexys Midnight Runners, Stevie Wonder, George Harrison, Blondie, Laura Branigan, Don McLean, Grace Jones, Juice Newton, Gerry Harrison (Talking Heads), The Wiggles, Little River Band and Ronnie Milsap amongst countless others. Peter joined the Disney Music Group in 2016 as Senior Manager, International for Disney Music Publishing and was tasked with protecting and enforcing the global rights and collecting all revenue types for the iconic Disney Music Publishing catalogue globally, ex-USA.  Day-to-day responsibilities include overseeing and managing the relationships with all our global partners, including resolving any and issues at all 187 CMOs globally as well as DSP disputes.  Black Box reports reviewed frequently; suspense and control accounts matched against our catalogue claims; YouTube Disputes and Appeals claim resolution on a daily basis; and international monitoring of Societies’ distributions and income tracking of missing royalties. NARIP Mastermind Series
Meet the Expert:

Alan Beck, President, Pacific Concert Group
Make It Rich As A Concert Promoter

April 16 date SOLD OUT!
New date April 23 added

We have scheduled a second date to take place on Wednesday, April 23
12:00 noon – 1:00 p.m. Pacific / 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. Eastern

ABOUT NARIP’S MASTERMIND SERIES:

Each month, NARIP will feature a top executive from the record and music industries in a live, interactive teleseminar. The experts will describe their jobs from benefits to pitfalls, and provide insight as to what works and what doesn’t. Get the facts, hear answers to questions you submit directly to each speaker, and review every important detail on the recording available after each session at NARIP’s Online Store (www.narip.com).

SESSION #1: MAKE IT RICH AS A CONCERT PROMOTER

Featuring Alan Beck, President of Pacific Concert Group

The live concert business has never been more ripe for opportunity than today. With superstar acts retiring, venues of all sizes needing audiences and an insatiable demand for music (especially live music), the stage is set for young concert promoters and entrepreneurs to enter this lucrative and exciting business.

But there are risks.

Is this session of NARIP’s Mastermind series, independent promoter ALAN BECK discusses how he’s cracked the code and has grossed millions of dollars in concert revenues over 16 years in a row with the popular Super Love Jams and Freestyle Explosion tours he created, multi-act shows which emulate the old Motown Revues.

These tours have been copied by others, which he proudly notes have never had the same success as Pacific Concert Group. “When the big boys try to copy the little guy, you know you are doing something right!”

Starting with a 200-seat event in 1992, Beck has been selling out 15,000+ capacity buildings year after year and is still going strong in 2008.

Beck will detail how he got started, his formula for success and what to avoid. He will also discuss how shows are bought, sold and built upon; and how to make money from them.

FACT: Beck has built his entire career with artists who have not had a certified current radio hit since the 1960s, 70s OR 80s and has STILL turned this into millions of dollars.

You will learn:

What is a concert promoter?

Getting started and exploring this field. How to jump in? Can you do it on your own or do you need to work for another promoter?

Why concert promotion still remains one of the most financially rewarding areas in the entertainment business.

Who should pursue a career as a concert promoter? Do you have what it takes?

How much can a concert promoter make? Per concert, per year. How much can you lose? Risk versus reward.

How to compete or work with the biggest concert promoters including Live Nation and AEG and how to get their attention.

How to use experience as a concert promoter to advance your career in other areas such as personal artist management, as a talent agent or even to propel your own career as an artist. Can an artist actually become a concert promoter?

How to put an event together. Starting small at the club level and growing into arenas: financing, promotion and details.

Local to regional to national promotion: all can be highly profitable. And is expanding a smart idea? Again, risks versus rewards.

How to break into this area of the entertainment industry.

Preparing for a concert: the night of and the aftermath.

Be ready for competition: they will come after you… compete against you… try to steal your ideas… chew you up and spit you out. Can you still stand? How to make them respect you.

Financing a concert: how to raise money, secure investors and sponsors.

When to cancel a show and when to stick it out. How to salvage an event that looks like it will lose money and turn it into a money-maker.

The importance of professional relationships: artists, managers, agents and radio. How to win them over and get them to go with you.

True independent promotion including co-promotion, packaging shows for bigger promoters and removing the risk. Earn a bonus.

Pollstar: The Touring Bible.

ABOUT ALAN BECK:

Alan Beck has revived the R&B Oldies music genre that was forgotten and almost buried ten years ago.

His formula for success can be applied to any niche market. Tune in to NARIP’s special teleseminar to learn how.

Sixteen years ago, disheartened because his favorite acts no longer toured and were ignored by the mainstream, Alan made inquiries and found out that his idols from the 70s would love to be back in the limelight and perform again. So he hooked it up. And the rest is history.

Today, Beck has not only a thriving concert promotion company producing over 40 sold-out shows a year at mid-sized venues and arenas throughout the southwest, he also has a record company (ITP Records), an artist management company (through which he manages rising star Sofia Maria), merchandise company and music publishing arm. He also produces a weekly radio program called The Underground Oldies Show, a 4-hour program based out of Phoenix on Mega 104.4 Arizona’s Old School, heard every Sunday from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. and on the Internet at www.itprecords.com on which many ITP recording artists are featured. Naturally, he also promotes Pacific Concert Group shows.

Formed in 1992, the Pacific Concert Group, booked shows with legendary urban / R&B soul groups and artists who were being ignored by the mainstream. At their shows, Beck saw a clear opportunity to record new material and re-record classics with these artists and formed ITP Records in 1996 to fill this need. Today ITP’s roster includes nationally charted R&B legends such as Bloodstone, GQ, Barbara Lynn, Sly Slick and Wicked, M.C. BLVD, The Superbs, Barbara Lewis, Gene Chandler, Barbara Mason, The Escorts, The Delegation, Carl Carlton, Deniece Williams and others including the talented and rising star Sophia Maria (www.sophiamaria.com) whom Beck manages. ITP has also leased and licensed rare musical tracks by such influential and historic artists as Smokey Robinson, The Manhattans, Billy Stewart, The Whispers, The Temptations, Lenny Williams, War, Eddie Holman and others. Beck has established publishing divisions augmenting his recording endeavors. Hymie Gropo is the BMI publishing company, and an ASCAP affiliation, Harold Clark Music, both a nod to Beck’s favorite TV series, “Get Smart.” He also produces a weekly radio program called The Underground Oldies Show, a 4-hour program based out of Phoenix on Mega 104.4 Arizona’s Old School, heard every Sunday from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. and on the Internet at www.itprecords.com on which many ITP recording artists are featured. Naturally, he also promotes Pacific Concert Group shows.

Can you say, “cross-marketing”?

Melissa Love, Senior Director, SongFinder Honing her industry chops overseeing music licensing, clearance and reporting for Turner Broadcasting’s news and entertainment networks, Melissa joined songfinder in 2007 where she expanded her work to include projects in film, television, new media and gaming. Her work includes licensing for FX’s Fargo and Archer, Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch, National Geographic Channel’s The Story of God, OWN’s Greenleaf and the independent film projects Diving Normal and The Stagecoach Bar: An American Crossroads. She is a member of Georgia Production Partners, Georgia Music Partners and is a Governor with the Atlanta Chapter of the Recording Academy (NARAS). Melissa served on the board of directors of Wilderness Works, a youth development agency serving homeless and disadvantaged children living primarily in metro Atlanta.   Juliett Rowe, Co-Executive Director, NARIP Atlanta, Moderator Juliett Rowe has spent her career working with indie and DIY musicians, whether writing about unknown artists for print, helping artists make strategic decisions regarding their art, or taking late night calls to offer words of encouragement.  In 2013, she became head of marketing and promotions for Atlanta indie record label Blood Drunk Records. With ten bands on its roster in various stages of recording and touring, Juliett developed album release plans, secured tour press, and elevated the label to become one of the strongest indie record labels in Atlanta. She realized that many people in the DIY music scene often went unnoticed and unrecognized for their hard work supporting artists, causing her to create the Atlanta Record Label Fest in 2015.  The event showcases people behind the scenes and serves indie record labels by creating an opportunity for networking and building community.  It also serves fans with cutting-edge musical artists, bridging gaps between genres and sub-cultures.  Its first year, the Atlanta Record Label Fest drew hundreds of people and brought together record labels and music fans.  The second year (2016) saw the event expanded to two days and included indie record labels from across the state of Georgia. In 2017 Juliett expanded her artist management and consulting business for independent and DIY artists with Panther Creek Artist Management. She also started working with Atlanta independent record label Madison Records (Orchard/Sony) on digital marketing and project management initiatives.  Juliett has combined her love of music and technology as a Co-Founder and Head of Client Relationships and Marketing with Bandskor, which is building a dashboard to help talent buyers manage and analyze band submissions. Juliett is active not only in the Atlanta music scene, but also with organizations like National Association of Record Industry Professionals (NARIP.com) and the Atlanta Chapter of the Recording Academy. She understands the need for education, networking, and supporting fellow friends and artists. You can often find her at a show, or hanging out with bands waxing poetic on the value of having a Web site and an email list.
